(also I've noticed the imagines have been matt but I have some Chris drafts dw)
not my crying rn-

He was late. Matt missed dinner. It usually wouldn't be a big deal but he promised he would come home for dinner specifically because he was going to leave to see his family who still lived in Boston. He and his brothers were leaving LA temporarily, giving you and your son time together.  And it was going to be you and Charlie for one and a half weeks. The time apart was what worried you.
Charlie has never gone that long without seeing Matt, and you knew he wasn't gonna handle it well.

"I'll have daddy come in and kiss you good night when he gets here ok? Now go to sleep for momma,"

"But where's daddy?"

"I'm not sure baby,"

"Can you ask him?"

"Sure. Good night, I love you."

"Love you too momma,"

It was hard seeing the heartbreak in Charlie's eyes. Matt always told him good night even through face time or calls. You walked out of his bedroom and made your way downstairs to clean up the kitchen. Not very long after, Matt walks through the front door. He walks into the kitchen and apologizes.

"Charlie's waiting for a good night from you." You tell him. Ignoring his expression of regret, not even looking up at your husband.

"Got it." You exhale, knowing he left the room and is leaving to go upstairs.

He knocks lightly on the door and continues to walk in.

"Daddy!"

"Hey, buddy." He bends over and plants a soft kiss on Charlie's forehead and tucks him in after he lay down. "Good night Charlie, I love you."

"Wait! You're leaving? You just got here!" He sits up again, uncovering his Cars pajamas.

"You need some sleep kid." Matt looks at his four-year-old son with guilty eyes.

"Can you read me a bedtime story before you leave me?"

"Sure," His dad smiles. "No goofing around though ok? One short book and then bedtime." He turns on the lamp and grabs Charlie's favorite book from his small bedside table's shelf.

A few minutes pass and you realize you haven't heard Matt come out of Charlie's room yet. You make your way upstairs attempting to be quiet as you heard nothing. Down the hallway was Charlie's room, and you peaked around the corner.

Charlie, laying on Matt's lap. Sleeping while Matt brushed through the boy's hair. After waiting a few minutes Matt spoke.

"Goodnight Charlie. I love you." He lifts him and tucks him into his bed again. With a kiss on the forehead, he turns around and sees you in the door frame. He clicks the lamp off and walks to you in the hall.

"I don't ask much from you."

"I know, I'm sorry."

"So what? You just aren't going to tell me why you were late?"

"I- I lost track of time with my brothers. You can ask them."

"I don't want to have to ask them!"

"I apologized! What do you want me to say?!"

"You fucking tell me! You leave tomorrow, I just wanted a simple dinner with you and our child! Is that so incomprehensible?"

"Y/n, I am sorry. How many times do I have to say that?"

"Momma?"
Your eyes, already stinging, teared. Had he heard the whole thing?

"Hi baby, what are you doing up?"

"You guys were yelling."

"I'm sorry kiddo, daddy, and I didn't mean to wake you."
Charlie stood in front of you, you squatting down meeting near his height.

"Do you hate daddy?"
Your vision blurred as you looked into the 4-year-old eyes.

"Of course not! I love him and I could never stop loving him. I think I might just love you more though."
You whisper playfully, gently poking Charlie's sides getting a few laughs.
"Come on, let's get to bed."
You lift and carry him to his bedroom, tucking him in again.

"Goodnight baby,"
You kiss him on the forehead.
"I love you,"

"And daddy?"

"And daddy."
You step back and Matt says goodnight and goodbye. The lamp flicks off again, and the two of you walk out of the room, leaving the door open for Charlie.

"I love you too."
Matt said, he kissed you and went downstairs probably to eat what was left over from the dinner he missed.
