Five red lights switched off, engines on full power, tires screeching on the asphalt. She felt most alive when risking her life on a race track. In fact, she always felt better when racing, especially if she felt safe. The adrenaline rush, the thrill, the sense of victory. Everything was just perfect when she was racing. Well, not completely perfect, but close enough.

She raced for a prize that rightfully belonged to her, or at least that's what she told herself. At the moment, winning the races had become her sole reason for existence, and it was not going according to plan. Throughout this particular race, the thought of winning was becoming far less important to her as time went by. A feeling in her stomach, similar to dread mixed with anticipation was rising higher and higher inside her as each second ticked by. This track had not been kind to her in the past, the barriers surrounding it being extremely hard to avoid as she drove dangerously close to them. Still, she refused to slow down as she wanted to reach the finish line before anyone else. She didn't need to look in her mirrors to know that her teammate was gaining on her. He was much faster than her and was closing in on her at a rate she could barely keep track of. She tried everything she could to shake him off, but the road conditions made it impossible and all she could do was grit her teeth in frustration.

Pierre had passed her a few times before, but never this close to the finish line and she cursed under her breath. Her eyes never stopped darting to the speedometer, but Pierre kept catching up to her, his car speeding alongside hers. She desperately tried to increase her speed as fast as she could, but it was futile and it hurt almost as much as it infuriated her. Side by side they neared the end, and it became obvious to both that at least one of them was bound to lose.

Her fingers clenched around the steering wheel as she forced the pedal further into the floorboard. The sound of the tires screaming against the street drowned out the screams of the crowd and the sound of her heart pounding inside her ears.

Just a little longer, one last push.

She hit a large patch of rough pavement, causing her tyre to spin out and causing her car to swerve violently to the left, narrowly missing the barrier with a shower of sparks. Desperately she fought to regain control over her vehicle, pulling the wheel sharply to the right as she attempted to right herself once again. Her efforts proved futile, and her car flew forward, crashing straight into her teammate. Both cars spun around and around, sending sparks flying every which way in every direction, as the metal crashed loudly together and both of them struggled to break free.

"Are you okay?" Her engineer, Colin, asked over the intercom as the sound of his voice filled her ears. It sounded calm and steady, as though nothing out of the ordinary was happening outside of his control.
