Why Now?

It started when I was at a party with Sophia Grace; my girlfriend at the time.

"Come on Jessie we have to go to the party," Sophia said dragging me by the arm.

I had to finish my beer but I let her drag me to the door where I took one last swig and threw the bottle into the recycling. She looked absolutely stunning with her blonde hair pulled into a messy bun at the top of her head and purple feather earrings hanging onto her sky blue off the shoulder number. I don't know how she wore those suffocating blue heels but she loved them and they matched her dress so I didn't complain. We were going to a party at Jeffrey Collins' house because he had just moved out of his parents place into a house with his girlfriend Emily Blythe. Apparently his new place was a score, just like Emily.

We walked out to the kerb and got into the brilliance also known as a 1984 dodge ram. Sophia liked to joke about how I love my car more than I love her, I don't know if that's true but I always tell her it's not. I started the car and savoured the sound of the engine warming up. Sophia complained that it was cold and turned on the heat. I don't like the heater because it goes too loud and I can never hear the radio. I left it on because, well you know the saying, 'Happy wife, Happy life' right? And that's what I wanted her to be; my happy wife. I was planning on popping the question at the party. And yea you may think 'why is an 18 year old guy proposing to his girlfriend just after they finished high school?' and it's because at that time I was young and dumb so don't judge. I pushed the thought of marriage out of my head so she wouldn't get any hint of what I was planning.

                                                                                                *

We pulled up outside Jeffrey's new place and I blinked, it was great it was a two-storey and had 2 huge panorama view windows and looked really modern with its white walls and bar lights over the island in the kitchen.

" Man I wish our place looked like this," I said, looking at Sophia.

" Yea it's really pretty, isn't it," she replied.

I was staring blankly at the house thinking about nothing in particular.

"Jessie, we have to go inside," she said gently.

"Oh yea, yea OK," I replied.

She pushed open her door and stepped carefully onto the pavement. I followed her lead pushing open my own door and stepped onto the lawn. We walked up to the house together and admired the well kept lawn. The grass was cut short and neat with a slight slope leading down towards the house. It matched the modern house perfectly. The only thing out of place was the old fashioned doorknocker shaped like a boar with a nose ring. It was cool and I didn't doubt Jeffrey had scored it from some random garage sale somewhere.

I knocked on the door and was surprised when it swung open almost instantly to reveal a dark room light only by red candles. I looked behind the door and saw no one. Sophia looked like she was going to bolt, I laughed and started off down the hall. Following the skeleton's hands pointing to the stairs to the top floor, I looked back to see Sophia still huddled by the door and clutching her purse tightly with both hands. I creep through a door I can see that leads to the kitchen that we saw from the main hallway. I peeked around the corner and saw her with her back facing me and snuck up behind her grabbing her shoulders.

"BOO!"  I said not even loud.

"AHHHH!" She screamed with a look of terror on her face.

She looked at me and frowned.

"Fuck Jessie," She said out of breath.

"You did, last night," I laughed.

She blushed and pushed my shoulder while I pulled her along through the house. She held my hand for dear life. As we walked through the hallway Sophia gripped tighter and tighter but neither of us made a sound until...

"RAAAA!" someone yelled to our left.

Sophia screamed and hid behind me while I just laughed, I knew that voice, it was my old buddy Jeffrey Collins from high school. Sophia saw who it was and stormed forward punching him on the arm. His face went red and he rubbed his arm.

" I missed you too chica," He said with a grimace.

" Oh no you don't," She replied.

" You don't try and use your sweet little Spanish speak to get out of this."

He hugged her and patted her head; they were like brother and sister and had grown up knowing each other since their moms met in the maternity ward. They were born on the same day and I was jealous of how close they were. Me and Jeffrey had been best friends since fourth grade and I knew he would never hurt me through her so I just smiled and hugged Jeff too.

" Hey man, how have you been?" I asked him clapping his back.

" Ah Bueno man but it was a bit of a struggle moving in, you know?" He replied with a small smile.

" I get it, those girls have so much crap that it takes like 4 loads just to get their stuff," I joked.

Jeffrey laughed and Sophia stormed off down to the basement where Emily was beckoning her to join the party. Me and Jeffrey walked down to join them but Jeff stopped me just before the stairs.

" Look Jessie, there's something I need to tell you," He said nervously.

"Yea sure man, What's up?" I asked.

"There's a guy looking for you. His name is Tom. I don't know what he's here for and he doesn't look very buff so I think you could take him," He spurted out in a rush, sizing up my biceps.

I laughed.

I was sure it would all be fine.
