At 7, all of the kids were gone...except Kate. The daycare doesn't close until around 9, but it was still kinda worrying. She started getting really tired around 7:15. I set her up in the nap corner, dimmed the lights in the daycare, and waited.
She was still asleep an hour later when I heard something. A jingling noise coming from the tower. Before I could react, I saw something. SUN! THANK GOD ITS SUN! I RAN ACROSS THE ROOM BEFORE HE HAD EVEN GOT OUT OF THE BALLPIT.
"SUNNY! OHMYGOD SUNNY!" I pulled him out of the ballpit and into a hug, absolutely squeezing the life out of him.
Well, Y'know...if he was alive.
"Are you okay? What's wrong?"
"I'm fine, sun, just...been weird alone."
"Well I'm here now. Is there anything I can help with?"
"Not really, sunny. There's still one kid here but she's asleep. Everything's cleaned up."
"Guess I'll just focus on you, y/n" sun said, suddenly gripping my waist and pulling me into a kiss.
"Sun!" I giggled "I just told you there's still a kid here!"
"And you said they're asleep"
"Their parents will be here any minute now. We should keep this professional."
"Are you sure you want to...?" He whispered into my ear
"You know I don't, sunny."
"Then why limit yourself?" He grabbed my waist
"Sun, I said not now." I said sternly, breaking from his grasp"You're not usually like this...I think they messed with your personality module during maintenance." I began to walk off
"Wait, y/n, where are you going?" He cried
"To talk to Marty in maintenance."I got to the maintenance floor and immediately found Marty.
"Evening kid, what's going on? Like our additions to sun"
"Marty, suns personality chip is messed up. What did you do?"
"Odd. We just did some upgrades, but we tested him before sending him back out. What's he doing?"
"He's..." I wasn't even sure how to word it. I've known Marty pretty much my whole life but...what was I supposed to say? He's flirting with me and probably trying to screw? Wait... "he's acting more like moon than himself."
"Let me come take a look. I might have an explanation for you."So, I walked Marty to the daycare where sun sat there...acting like himself again. There he was just sitting swinging his hanging feet, keeping a joyful gaze on the nap corner, the lights still dimmed in the room. "Hi y/n!" He said in a bright voice. He then paused and his legs stopped swinging. Marty approached him.
"I think I know what's going on." He said before turning to them "Hey, are you sun or moon?"
"What?" He rasped
"Sun or moon, what is your name?"
"Moon..."
"Moon, you're in a new, rather experimental state triggered by rapidly changing or dim lighting. We've been calling it eclipse. In this state, you and sun can switch as you wish. There is a potential of unwanted switching, so I would advise you and y/n to keep this in mind before dimming the daycare lights. Especially when there are kids there. I was planning on informing everyone in the meeting tomorrow, but I guess today works too."
"So that's why they thought I was sun."
Marty nodded.
"Well kid, I've gotta head back but...be smart."
I nodded at him in response. I looked back at moon.
"Best behavior while kids are still here. Got it?"
"Fine, fine...but I guess that would mean you don't want this"
Moon pulled me close, my face inches from his, then he suddenly pulled back.
"MOON! What was that?!" He cried out. The raspy voice returned in response. "Wanted to see if they'd go for it."Kate jolted up, seemingly startled by something. I pushed eclipse aside and hurried to the small girl, who was starting to cry. I kneeled down next to her.
"Did you have a bad dream, Katie?" I asked. She nodded vigorously as tears poured down her little cheeks.
"It's okay, I won't let anything get you here." I picked her up, holding her tight, cradling her in my arms, and sat on the soft floor. I shushed her quietly, gently rocking her. Suddenly, I felt weirdly tired, and the young child in my arms started having trouble keeping her eyes open. I felt cold arms around me from behind, which ran along my own arms, supporting Kate as well.
"Moon..." I started
"Sun, actually. Well...mostly. The-the consciousness is me."
I leaned back into him and closed my eyes, absolutely exausted from the day.
