CHAPTER 1
It was a cool crisp morning when the town folks of
Deerfield saw an unknown young woman walked into
town. She had long black hair with tan skin. She walked
with a purpose but also with the look of fear. She never
looked either direction. The towns people noticed her
walking passed the local grocery. Everyone stood in
silence as they watched her until she was no longer in
view.
he grocery store owner, Brad stood with Sam and
Liz, whispering softly among one another. The people
who lived in Deerfield were on the stranger side of
things. There was a connection and a secret between
Brad and his employees. He's always had the same
employees. Everyone who knew Sam, knew not to be on
his bad side because he was the only mechanic, and he
had a few mental issues. He had come from a home of
terror and abuse so everyone kind a felt sorry for him but
also feared him.
Liz was one of the clerks at the local grocery and a
single mother. Although rumor had it as being Brad's. He
had been there since her birth as a father. He said to Liz,
he didn't want her to grow up without a father so he
would proudly step in. She agreed gratefully. He made
sure she never wanted for anything.
George had lived in the bayou all his life. His folks
owned the land with a small cabin on the property. He
married his high school sweetheart. He and Holly had
gotten pregnant a few times, but never could carry to full
term. After trying to start a family for so many years,
they gave up. She had a mental breakdown and decidedthat she wanted a divorce. Holly had convinced herself
that George was the reason why they couldn't have a
family due to the time he has spent in the war. She told
George that he would never be happy with anyone for as
long as she lived. She was determined to make his life
hell to be sure he lived in misery.
After their divorce, she began to get into witchcraft.
She summoned a demon by using a Ouija board. She
made a deal with the demon to cover her with the fog so
no-one would see what she was doing in the middle of
the night. Liz and Holly had known each other since high
school. She knew about what Holly had done. Liz had
spoken to Holly about others joining them into their
secret circle.
Holly promised the demon a soul every month to
keep the craft going for her hidden agendas. Holly had
opened a small store where she and her followers had
their meetings after closing. They sometimes went to the
old cemetery. The group would make small things
happen. Nothing too sinister. Some streetlight outages,
even some playful hauntings in some of the homes of
some of the circle’s enemies. No one had ever really hadany real problems until the fire on the bayou when the
first body was discovered. It was storming late that
evening and the fog began to roll into town from the
bayous.
The people of Deerfield feared the fog and rain. They
knew nothing good comes with it. Everyone knew
someone was going to disappear only they didn't know
who may be next. People stayed indoors and didn't open
their doors until the rain was gone, no matter how long
they had to wait. The town even closed everything down
before sundown. No-one would be seen after 4 pm. The
dark hours held a different kind of feeling to it, almost as
if you could feel it in your bones. Like when you get a
feeling when your hair stands up on the back of your
neck.
The town had a somewhat of a haunted history, only
locals had knowledge of. Due to the strange events that
happen when the rains come, no one in town would ever
speak about what happens for fear that one of their
loved ones could be the next victim. Even the local
witches didn't know what was to come.
Holly would be visited from the demon the nightbefore to be told that someone else’s life would be
taken. She stayed clear of who she thought was next to
disappear without a trace. She worked like normal as if
nothing was wrong.
The local police department knew that when the
rain came, they would have another missing person to
add to the wall or another body to add to the morgue.
The young lady that came into town a few days prior was
never seen again, and no one questioned it. Everyone
knew once they seen her walking through town, she
would never be seen again. All new “visitors” never
would stay too long and if they had, they were made
aware of the events that sometimes happen in their
quite little town and no one was to speak of it. Everyone
kept to themselves, minding their own business.
There are no bus stops in town for any new people
to arrive from only the one just outside of town so
people would have to walk from there into Deerfield.
Which was just about a mile. People that come to
Deerfield only come for one reason or another. Either to
get away from their old lives or maybe just disappear
from their past or to start over in a small town hardly anyone had heard of before. Thinking that they would be
safe in such a small town that anyone looking for them
wouldn't think to look there. The locals were strange
enough, others would just think it was a town of crazies
and no one in their right mind would go there unless they
wanted to disappear or was running from someone or
something.
George was known as the man in the bayou to the
locals. He was a single man that has never had children
to past down the family property. He kept to himself, and
he rarely came into town for anything other than
groceries and supplies. He had lived on the bayou his
entire life. His parents and their parents lived in the cabin
in the woods for centuries. George grew most of his food
on his land. He would come into town to Cami's, the local
bar to have a drink or two before going back to the
bayou. He would sit in the back dark corner of the bar
watching others around him as if he was taking notes on
their actions. George was ex-military and only was gone
from Deerfield while on active duty only to come back to
the same old cabin in the woods on the bayou.
The streetlights came on at dusk in the square. Perfectplace for romance and secrets. The fog was to cover the
witches in their dark events, but the fog was a sign the
demon Holly had summoned wanted another soul or he
would come for her next. The witches would meet at
midnight in the graveyard to practice magic given from
the demon. They would perform their rituals of sacrifice
on small animals to scare the locals.
Mason was the bartender from Cami's bar but was
also someone everyone knew was also ex-military along
with a strange way of making people afraid of him and
also trust him in some way. Even though the witches
didn't know they were being watched, a different type of
person would listen from the darkness, learning their
tricks and spells. He stalked his victims in the dark
shadows of the night.
Sam was the town's only mechanic, but everyone
felt sorry for him due to the nature in which he was
raised and treated. He worked at the grocery in town. He
helped Brad in the deli to keep away from customers due
to his bipolar and quick temper. He wasn’t very good
with crowds. He had blonde hair pale skin with scars on
his face and arms. He killed his best-friend by accidentwhile playing with his father's gun. Sam had never been
the same since. He had a mental breakdown afterwards
and set to the mental hospital for sometime.
Cami was an ex-police officer that opened the towns
local bar after working for the department for twenty
years of service. She wanted to have a place for the locals
to come to have a drink after a long day of work or just
to take their minds off their everyday lives. She hired
Mason as her new bartender due to his military
background and his knowledge on how to take care of
troublemakers. Cami was the only one brave enough to
stay open after sunset. She wasn’t afraid of anyone or
anything. She liked Mason right off. He gave her a good
feeling about who he was and how he would treat her
customers and being able to take care of things if they
were to get out of control. She didn’t need to hire a
bodyguard because of this reason. Not to mention he
had a kind of handsome and slick way of talking to
women and she knew that would also bring in the
women customers. Mason was 6’1’’, dark hair, slim but
also built, eyes that seem to pierce your soul. Mason
learned a lot while fighting in the war for so many yearshow to make a person hurt so badly before dying, they
begged to die.
Most everyone dressed in black. The town only had
one church which was in the edge of town. Everyone
attended for every service including the witches. The
church also served as the town hall and local library.
Everyone knew the town’s history and how dark and
deep it really went.
The killer lived in an older home near the bayou,
which was a perfect place to hide his victims. He was
careful not to be seen and only killed at night for the
coverage of the darkness. He hung his victims by their
feet to drain them completely of their blood. He targeted
the criminal element of people. People that wouldn't be
missed if they disappeared. People that had a bad habit
of being abusive and dangerous to others. Only those
that deserved to be punished for their crimes. He once
kept a man alive for a week while he skinned him piece
by piece. Never taking too much at once so he could keep
him alive long enough to hear him beg for mercy.
Down the road George lived on, there had been
many seriously injured or died due to the high blades ofgrass along the sides of the road and very sharp curves.
There aren’t any lights from the town so far out into the
bayou so if you were stranded without any headlights or
flashlights no-one could see you until it was too late. In a
small clearing near one of the bayous with an old
cemetery, some have said to have seen ghosts hanging
from the old oak trees, one being always bare of any
leaves only moss hanging from its branches appearing to
be some kind of creature with wings seeming to glare at
drivers through the headlights of passing cars.
Some have said to have seen a man, a young child,
and a lady walking across the road after midnight.
Nearing them, they seem to disappear into the night. The
lady is said to have been wearing an old-fashioned dress
and the man and the young child wearing old-fashioned
suits. Some that's been stranded on the side of the road
and had no choice to walk to find help have heard cries
of the young child that accidently drowned in the bayou
and dragging noises can be heard along with footsteps
behind them.
