chapter one 😻

8 a.m ; sherman oaks high

maria's pov:

I walked into the school I'd be attending this year with my brother , malcolm and my best friend victoria. I was excited for my sophomore year but as I walked to my locker that suddenly changed. There was sweaty guys everywhere, kissing couples, and what I presumed to be the popular girls just waiting by the bathroom. As I approached my locker I witnessed two people flirting lockers away from mine which made me cringe but I decided not to criticize yet. I walked to the first class on my schedule and they happened to be there too. I was wearing a lavender lacey tank top with flared light jeans blue jeans and white air forces. (ref photo at top <3)

After four classes, it was lunch and everyone scrammed through the halls leaving me lost with everyone else in the crowd. I eventually saw my brother and best friend sitting down at a table clearly waiting for me and when they saw me they sighed in relief. "We thought we lost you" victoria said. "Did you guys grab lunch?" I asked. They shook their heads saying they were waiting for me to come. We all went to grab lunch and I went to the vending machine and bought snacks for us to share. My brother started scoping out a group of girls who had been in my classes earlier. "What're you staring at" we laughed. "That girl Eleanor was in one of my acting classes a few years back. She's pretty or whatever." We taunted him until the bell rang and we all went separately to our classes. A boy whose locker didn't seem far from mine walked up to me and introduced himself "hey, my name's ben gross. the principal assigned me to give you a tour so we'll do that right after school but for now we have the same classes so I'll walk with you. He smiled throughout the speech he had just given and I awkwardly did the same and followed him as he walked through the swarm of teenagers pacing for their class. He pointed to the classroom telling me to enter as he opened the door and walking up to the teacher. " this is the new student. maria right?" I nodded and he continued the conversation. I went to sit but he called me right back up "Where do you think you're going we need an intro!" He said enthusiastically as I just stood there. "Um I don't really know what to say but my name is maria. I like music , food, and art I guess. Oh and I also write like just for fun" as I finished I heard snickers throughout the classroom and I quickly went to my seat putting my head down as soon as I sat down. A boy whispered to me "I think your pretty." I looked up and saw a pretty much perfect boy with chestnut brown eyes , beautiful brown locs, olive skin, and pinkish lips. My jaw dropped as I stuttered to spit out a simple thank you but once I did so I had already made it weird. I took out my phone and airpod putting one in and only halfway listening to the lesson while playing "bad habit" by steve lacy. I took out my notebook and started doodling and just randomly sketching in my book until the period ended. I went to the bathroom and saw my brother on the way which stopped me completely and I just talked to him until Ben eventually found me. He took me to the next class which didn't look very entertaining but I walked in and saw the guy from last period who had complimented me so nicely. I had to sit next to him so I told him my name and he told me his was paxton. Hm, that was cute I guess. The next few classes we talked and by the end of the day we had exchanged numbers and already knew a little about each other. We are hoping to be partners in at least some classes but Ben started walking me out "looks like someone has a new boyfriend" he chuckled I glared at him "huh what do you mean." Now that paxton has his eyes on you he won't leave you alone until you guys at least hook up. You guys could date I mean you have the looks but paxton doesn't really like to take it slow I guess? I'm not really sure how that works but trust me girls who get with him don't stay for long." I looked at him one more time before sighing "I don't think he's like that. I know it's only my first day but his personality just doesn't show that. We'll see and I do appreciate your warning but I'd like to see for myself. Thanks anyways ben. See you tomorrow right?" He agreed and walked away silently.

When I got home i discussed my encounter with paxton to my best friend and she was so excited. She said he's really popular from what she'd seen so it would have been a great privilege for me. I was pretty excited. I mean, I know I had been warned hours before but even then it seemed interesting and made her anxious about how thing would turn out between them. All that was left to do was let time pass and see what was going to happen.
