"Alec, you coming too, right?" Like a whistle, Louis' voice suddenly cuts through, putting my train of thoughts to a halt. "What?" I mumble a little disoriented. It's been at least twenty minutes since I zoned out. Whatever they've been saying, I did not follow.
"Babe come on," Melissa goes, snapping her fingers as if I'm a dog who's attention needs to be called upon "my parents aren't home tonight, so I was asking if you guys want to come over" she glances around the table, looking for confirmation with the others. Then she looks back at me with a frown "you'll be there, right?" Be there? to drink all night? come on guys, it's Wednesday. "Can't, got plans" I say, which I say a lot these days.
"Plans?" she repeats "with who?" Sadly 'my bed' won't be a sufficient answer. My line of sight slips past Melissa and lands on a rather small and round boy behind her. Before I know it, I'm raising my hand and calling out to him "Oliver!"
He turns to look, it takes a moment before he finds me, but when he does he lights up. "Alec!" he waves and comes heading my way. I get up from my seat and meet him half-way "How you been man?" I say as we shake hands.
"Who's this?" Suddenly, Melissa besides me, her arms wrapped around my bicep. "Oh, this is Oliver. I used to watch him when he was little." I say and he waves at her a bit shy. "Alec the nanny, who would have thought?" she teases and squeezes my arm.
"haha... anyways," Looking up at Oliver, noticing he's gotten a little taller since the last time I saw him "how are you? how's school?" He's in his first year now. I've been meaning to check up on him, but for some reason I haven't seen him until now. "School sucks" he grins sourly, "oh!" but then his smile turns honest "I joined a band though!" A band? I never knew he played an instrument. "How nice! you joined the school band?" I can already see him playing the trumpet.
"No, no. my friend's band. He's in your year I think... oh! here he comes!" I follow his eyes, but "Noah!" I can't say I'm too excited to see who they land on. Noah Miller, the school freak. He and his weirdo friends are always doing something creepy. The other day they were fucking around with a spirit-board, scared all the girls away. Oliver became friends with that guy? That can't be right.
Noah sees Oliver and starts jumping up and down as he makes his way over to us. "Olayyyyy" With a grin as wide as his face he pulls Oliver into a tight hug. An exchange that catches me off-guard. "Ma man!" he pats him on the back before letting him go "you ready to rumble?" Oliver turns to look at me "I'm in his band! we're called 'the shattered bones' isn't that sick?!" sick... yes. I look over at the guy next to him, he's taller than Oliver, but still short. Our eyes meet and his expression turns just as uncomfortable as mine.
Oh, I see. He's just as biased about me as I am about him... still, he's Oliver's friend! make an effort!
I try and shake his hand, when Melissa soundly cuts through "Ew, Oli, you're friends with this guy?" All three our heads turn to her in the exact same motion. She's wearing the grimace she's expected to wear when standing face-to-face with a guy like Noah, but still, it's damn rude. Suddenly the guy in question snorts a laugh. "Well aren't you blunt?" he says with a sneer and turns around "I'll be waiting over at the gate, hurry it up!"
"ah wait-" Oliver calls after him, then looks back at Melissa. A little angry might I add. Then he leaves too. I hear Melissa scoff, as if she'd just been insulted. Annoyed, I yank myself out of her hold. "What the hell is wrong with you?" I say and all of a sudden it's me people look at, like I just said something incredibly rude to a whole ass stranger
"Excuse me?" Melissa asks with a glare, acting as if she's done nothing wrong. "Do you know how rude that was?" I start, when one of the guys butts in "dude, come on." he says, but all I hear is 'what's the big deal?'
Now it's my turn to scoff. I look at him. I look at her. And without saying another word, I leave.
"Oliver!" I catch up with them just as they're about to leave. Both of them look pretty surprised to see me. I search for the eyes of the taller boy, he's meeting mine quite willfully "I'm sorry man, that was so rude, I don't know why she..." he frowns, though it's hard to notice through the long curly bangs covering his forehead.
"huh? oh. oh! well that's nice, but you don't have to apologize though?" he tilts his head and folds his arms, his hair falls to the side "you're not the one who insulted me." the corners of his mouth turn a bit, to the point he might even be smiling? "I suppose so" I chuckle kinda awkward and hold my hand out to him "I'm Alec." He looks at it with big brown eyes "well aren't you full of surprises?" he mumbles, more to himself really, then takes it "Noah."
"Nice to meet you" I smile, which for some reason, seams to surprise him even more. He looks away a little embarrassed. My smile grows and I look over at Oliver "Say, whatever you guys got planned for today,
can I come with?"
