Medusa was an extremely beautiful woman (some may say that she was more beautiful than the goddess herself , Athena) and she was loved and admired by many. Now of course her prominent features meant that she was a target of men when it comes to marriage. There was one man who was particularly interested in her: The god of the ocean and seas, Poseidon. He wanted her hand in marriage. Well the problem was that Medusa was a priestess of Athena. In order to be a priestess you would have to be a virgin.. Noting this Medusa kindly rejected Poseidon, but his anger took over the best of him and so he did the unthinkable. The next day while Medusa was walking towards Minerva (Athena's temple) Poseidon showed up and raped her. Once Athena had heard of the news she was angered and so she decided to curse Medusa. Her beautiful milky skin turned into a green and blue hue, her silky hair transformed into snakes and her doe eyes turned into a cold black. She had completely altered into a gorgon. Her very gaze turned petrified men into stone. Medusa then was sent to a far away land where she made her lair in a dark cavern. After all this still Athena had not yet finished her punishment and so she ordered Perseus to behead Medusa. He received a mirrored shield from Athena, sandals with gold wings from Hermes, a sword from Hephaestus and Hades' helm of invisibility. Since Medusa was mortal her neck was slain in an instant. During that time, Medusa was pregnant by Poseidon. When Perseus decapitated her, Pegasus, a winged horse, and Chrysaor, a giant wielding a golden sword, sprang from her body. Perseus was commanded to bring back two of Medusa's blood vessels which later would be identified for one to be a cure-all and the other a deadly poison...
