Since masters Kenobi and Skywalker were still on the mission, I was having my first session with the Temple guard. In the private dojo, he looked a little different. He still wore similar clothing and the mask, but not the robe. His body structure surely was like a man or male. Still unsure what kind of face hides under the mask. But still, he looked thin but not weak. Professional.
At first, I thought it would be like the other lessons. But these lessons were different.
"Attack me." He said.
I swallowed. He didn't give any other instruction, just 'attack'. I wasn't sure, but then I took my position and went at him. I repeated the same movements I was taught, but to my surprise, he blocked every one of them with only one hand behind his back. And in the end, he swung the stick away from my hand.
"Predictable," he said. "Even the younglings can break your defenses if this is the best you can offer."
Those words sounded harsh and yet he sounded calm. It felt like he wasn't taking me seriously.
"I haven't had many new lessons when Master Kenobi and Skywalker are away."
"That doesn't mean you can't learn on your own. Again."
I didn't like that tone. But still, I picked up my weapon and went at him again. I tried a different form but it ended in the same way. It only lasted a bit longer than the last one.
"Again," he said.
And I did, over and over. Every time I tried to go at him, he managed to beat me in a moment and I either lost my weapon or fell on the floor. And every time he kept saying "Again".
All of this was starting to become frustrating. I had used everything I knew. All the forms I was taught, all the ways I... Wait. There is something I haven't used.
Of course. My sight. I can see through the Force his coming moves and then counterattack them. I took my position and then... began.
Coming straight. Trying right. Then duck. Roll to the side. Then Left. Right. Repeat. Then slip to behind and... hit to the knee.
It worked! He got down to one knee after my hit.
"I did it!"
I spoke too soon. Even on one knee, he was able to make a strike, sweep me off and I thumped to the floor letting my breath out.
"Deciding to use your sight is advisable," He spoke as he got back up. " ...but it doesn't mean you can let your guard down."
"But I managed to strike you." I excused myself trying to get back up.
"Did you win?"
As much as I wanted to think I did, the truth was different.
"No."
The guard came close to me and continued speaking.
"You may hold the advantage by seeing forward. How the opponent comes at you, and their moves and flaws. But it doesn't mean you can lower your guard every time you think you know how it all ends. Some adversaries are unpredictable and demand more than a single strike to be beaten. Do you understand?"
I'm starting to feel unfit for this. Masters Kenobi and Skywalker were supposed to teach me to defend myself, not to become a fighter like they are. But,... what if he is right? There are so many dangers out there in the galaxy, who knows what kind of enemies would come after me in the future. And with the things I have seen, there will be a moment when I have to stand on my own. Which means I have to become skillful and better to survive.
