A young curly, blonde-haired boy with the brightest blue eyes stood on his tippy toes to get a peek at what his parents were holding. It couldn't've been that special right? At least that's what the young 3-year-old Henry Bowers thought.
He was beyond tired and confused as to why he was rushed to an unknown place full of people in weird white jackets. It made him giggle at how silly they all looked.
His mother, who matched him in looks—pretty, long dirty blonde hair matched with the brightest eyes, it was like looking into the ocean—she looked tired, bags under her eyes, sickly pain and thin. His dad had his hand on her shoulder, gripping a little too tightly.
A bundle of blankets in his mom's arms. It was a pale pink; it moved here and there. It piqued the boy's curiosity. "You wanna see baby?" His moms hoarse voice catches the toddler's attention as she leaned down from the hospital bed, showing Henry what was in the blanket bundle.
"Wow..." He breathed the words, smiling slightly, his small pale hand reached out and skimmed the newborn baby's face, it was soft and warm. "What is it?" He asked, his mouth ajar as he watched the baby open her eyes, wide and full of the same innocence as Henry.
Her eyes were a grayish blue, with hints of a dark green. He thought they were pretty, prettier than his. The baby reached a small hand out, it was the smallest thing he'd seen yet.
"This is your sister, Baeley. Say hi to her." She spoke softly, keeping baby Baeley propped up correctly.
"Hi, Baye..." He whispered—her name coming out short and slightly wrong—in pure awe at the sight of her. He didn't know how she came to be, or even why. He just knew he was gonna teach her everything he knew.
The bright smile on his face never left. Not even for the jealousy that was boiling in his stomach, he ignored it and watched his mother gush over the new addition to their unhinged family.
1979, May 3—
Amber bounced up and down on her feet, her shoes making a clicking sound with the floor. Her excitement overflowing like water in a small bucket. "Okay, okay. Calm down. Go get your brother, Baye."
Her mother's battered face gave way to a weak smile as the oblivious little girl cheered before racing off to her and her brothers shared room. Too young, too naive, to know what the plum-colored splotches on her mother's face hid.
"Henny! Henny!" She shouted as she pushed open the door, the newly 6-year-old boy jumped in his seat at his desk in surprise. Not expecting his sister to barge in.
"Baye! What'd I say about not knocking." He grumbled angrily, trying to hide the fact there was a dead, cut open, mouse on his desk. He didn't want her to see it, knowing how much she loved animals, he'd crush her happiness. He hated that.
She let out a gasp covering her mouth with her small pale hands before backing out and closing the door till it was cracked. Then she knocks twice and waits patiently for Henry to open the door.
He breathes a laugh at the action and opens a drawer in the desk, pushing the carcass into it. Only then does he get off his chair, making sure to wipe his hands off before opening the door. "Yes...?"
She smiles at the sight of the blonde boy; she grabs his wrist and tugs him down the hallway. "Happy birthday, Henny! Mommy baked you some cupcakes! Shhhh!!!" she harshly shushed him, before giggling like he wasn't supposed to know it.
Both children entered the kitchen, Henry sighing when his mother faced him. "Where's dad?" He asked quietly as his baby sister pulled him towards the kitchen counter.
His mother wipes her nose and turns around facing the counter again. "Work."
Henry scoffs out in annoyance for his own mother and her lack of... of everything. His eyes shift to his sister as she steps on her stepping stool.
"Look, I made these ones for you!"
He looked at the messily designed cupcakes and ruffled her hair. "Good job, Amber, those look great."
She giggled in delight as she fixed her hair, "Have one!" She picked the cupcake up with both her chubby hands and held it out to him.
Giving her a smile and taking it from her. "Thanks." Her toothy smile got bigger as he took a bite.
