I sat anxiously waiting for my name to be called. Oh! Goodness! It had to be today, if not, I may never get myself to do it but I couldn’t keep it either. I didn’t have the heart to put my family through it. What was taking the doctors’ so long? The noise from the television burst into the room breaking my thoughts. A family planning advert. Two and a half months back and I would have needed that. Shortly after, a nurse came out and called the name of the lady sitting by my side. As she got up, I moved to where she’d been sitting. Thank God I was next.
Ten minutes had past when I heard screaming and, in few seconds, it was followed by the lady that had been beside me, running out. She held on tightly to her belongings, looked towards the entrance and sprinted out before any of the hospital staff could reach her. The nurses that had tried to follow her, came back inside walking nonchalantly as if nothing had happened.
I swallowed, maybe I too should leave. This was such a dangerous procedure and its effect would be damning if it didn’t go as planned. I rubbed my throbbing neck. A nurse came out and called my name. I took my time getting up, shaking as I collected my things and went into a room with her. She waited until I had gone far into the room before bolting the door. I gasped seeing the blood splattered all over the floor. Was I in the right place? Jessica was certain of hospitable services but this did not look the least bit hospitable.
She pulled off the stained bedsheet and replaced it with another one almost as dirty as the former. This one had patches of stale blood. I almost gagged when the nurse opened a 15centimetres stainless bowl and I saw traces of blood clots poorly removed. I turned to face the door.
‘Madam lie down.’ I nodded, squeezing my eyes as I walked to the bed and laid on it. ‘I’d encourage you to be as quiet as possible.’ She walked to the other side of the room divided by curtains. ‘After all, when you were enjoying it, nobody was there with you. Mtchw! All these small small girls that will not allow their bodies to rest.’
