There was a place from which the angels used to look down to see loved ones. It never had a name other than "the Lake".
Nesta was sitting on the shore with Haya, trying to look through the clear water.
《Why can't I see him?》she asked, frustrated.
《You need to focus. You're nervous, it won't work until you reach the angels' calm.》The life angel was laying down in the sun, their white wings were open on their back.
The queen closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Angels were calm as the water of the lake, however, she felt her emotions crash in waves like an ocean.
She felt Haya's soft hands grab her shoulders. 《You're doing good. Focus. Now look in the water.》
She did as told.
The surface rippled and Nesta saw two people standing by the sea in Selmor.
She recognized Azrael, still in her body and the boy with him must have been Ryvel.
They were talking, but she couldn't hear a word.
The prince looked as kind as his words in letters. He looked like a hero.
Azrael looked so similar to her, yet so different. The angel stood smaller, as he was hiding himself. He didn't smile, but his eyes showed a depth that had never been in Nesta's eyes. Hers were bright and determined, his were kind but dark as the night.
She wondered if Lamiya noticed the difference...
She was her best friend since their birth, one day apart from each other.
She missed Lamiya, her smile, her eyes, the way she moved her hands in excitement when talking about dresses she made.
She was a royal, she could have had anyone make the most elegant dresses for her but she would rather do them herself.
She was also the only one who knew about Nesta's plan. She knew the queen was going to meet Lord Ewalt's men who betrayed him. Of course, they never did.
When the queen's eyes met the water again, Azrael wasn't there. She saw Lamyia laying on her bed, she was holding a piece of paper close to her chest.
Haya touched the girl's shoulder: 《I know you miss her, you will meet her again. Do you want to talk to Azrael?》
《I can?》 Nesta asked
《Yes, he's a death angel. Follow me, the trip is not going to be quick.》
The dead realm was ten times prettier than earth.
Prairies, mountains, hills, rivers... everything there shone like glitters in a pale, blue-ish light.
The water was clear as quarz, the grass seemed to have a thousand different shades of green.
《The Limit is a dangerous place to reach without an angel. But you have me, so there's no need to worry.》Haya said, walking in front of her.
《The Limit?》
《It's the only place you can talk to living ones... but very few mortals know how to reach it, so no one ever uses it.》 the angel explained.
《How does it work?》 Nesta asked, walking faster to keep the angel's pace.
《We reach the limit and send a signal to Azrael. If he's alone he'll send a sign back and at that moment I cast the limit spell so we can talk. It's simple, but not humanly possible.》
《That's cool.》She smiled: 《Everything seems cool here.》
Haya nodded: 《Hades made it. He wants dead creatures to exist as happily as possible here. Unless they were evil. They get eternal punishment.》
They stopped at the edge of a cliff, bigger than anything Nesta had ever seen.
The land opened to show nothing at the bottom, nothing but dark.
Thin chaines connected one edge to the other, although the two could only see the one they were standing on.
Flowers, plants, trees, everything disappeared to leave space to the obsidian canyon.
《What's on the other side?》 the queen asked.
《The evil realm. Where they get punished.》
《We have to go there?》 Nesta would have never admitted, but the idea scared her more than the void underneath.
《Oh no, we have to go down.》 Haya stepped on the chain: 《Flying in this canyon is pretty much impossible, there's just one way down. Come here.》
《How??》 She yelled, as the angel walked further from her until they became a small white figure.
The chain was slightly bigger than her feet, but it was just a chain, walking on it would be a suicide.
She looked at the iron chain with one foot on it.
"𝐼𝑡 𝑤𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑏𝑒 𝑎 𝑠𝑢𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑑𝑒..."
A suicide. She smiled as her other foot left the groud behind her.
"I'm already dead."
Walking turned out to be easy.
She reached Haya in no time.
《You did it!》They exclaimed: 《Hold on to my hand.》
She did as told and Haya jumped, taking her with them.
She couldn't help but scream at the top of her lungs.
The fall seemed to last ages.
The queen felt like the darkness was eating her. Branches, leaves and hands, cold as ice, seemed to touch her as she fell into the void.
Distant voices didn't want to leave her head, she screamed to cover them.
Haya tighten the hold on her hand, they did not make a sound.
"𝑊𝑒'𝑟𝑒 𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑜 𝑇𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑢𝑠..."
And they were.
