Rei knew the monsters were bad news from the start.

When Fenn has a dream telling him to go to his dead rival's abandoned castle, he goes with his friends, Maeve, a cat hybrid with a strange love for fire and an intense personality, and Rei, a sweet, innocent ghost with a knack for knocking things over and a dangerous ability.

The trio uncovers secrets, drowning beneath the tides, hidden by time and ignorance.

In her past life, Rei was a 27 year old woman named Luna Key. At a young age she started experimenting with potions and successfully developed the one. She became a scientist, specializing in mostly the research of new species and the enhancement of humans, an occupation that would eventually get her killed.

On a trip to the Infernal, she spotted a peculiar young girl, she had black cat ears and a tail but looked otherwise human. The girl seemed to be speaking to the Nether creatures. Luna kidnapped her and brought her back to the lab where she learned the girl's name.

Days later, Luna finished the potion she was working on, an enhanced and permanent heat resistance potion. Deciding to test it on the child she forced the girl to drink it, saying she would release her if she did.

After confirming that it was safe, with no side effects to the girl, she drank it herself; her final mistake. Luna had incorrectly assumed the girl was more human than she really was, resulting in it not killing the child but only giving her some "problems." The potion was too strong for a non-infernalborn to take and ended up killing Luna.

After death she decided to stay behind and haunt the girl but ended up losing the memories of the life she left behind. Years later Maeve discovered the ghost, calling her Rei because of her wolf-like features. Rei eventually met Fenn and moved in with him across the river.

Born in the Infernal, she has the ability to speak to the creatures there.

Maeve was taken from her home when she was only four and forced to drink something that changed her life. It gave her permanent resistance to scorching temperatures and often caused her to overheat, making her lose consciousness for hours at a time.

After her captor was killed by that same substance, Maeve escaped the horrible place and found herself in a snowy taiga. She moved into the person's house, very close to the exit and remains there to this day.

She prefers to be in colder areas, as it stops her from overheating. Maeve learned to survive in the wilderness as a young child and often uses a bow to hunt.

Years later she noticed bits of a human body would appear around her, usually seeing it out of the corner of her eye. She would witness objects apparently falling with no cause. Maeve tried to convince herself that it was only her imagination or maybe the wind but she knew it was more.

She eventually built up the courage to communicate with whatever was doing this. Maeve was shocked to find out it was a ghost haunting her. The ghost seemed to remember nothing of her past life and quickly befriended Maeve. The two became close friends, even sisters, Maeve called her Rei. Some time later Fenn came to the mountain and Rei moved in with Fenn.

Fenn was adopted by a human couple after he was cast away from his home when he was six. He lived with his adoptive parents for two happy years in a forest not far from Quest Town.

When he was eight his home was burned down by King Vidof's army, close to the end of The War of King Vidof. His parents died in that fire but he was saved. A girl named Narcia was tracking the army's movements to try to stop them, she saw the burning house and saved Fenn, calming him down by giving him an amethyst crystal to play with.

Narcia brought the boy to a town where the elders started calling him Mushroom, hence the large muchroom hat he wore. He had a good time in the town, he was treated kindly and given battle training, making him deadly in a fight.

Despite this, he wanted more freedom, he hadn't been off Narca Island for years and the elders were very protective of him. One day, when he was about thirteen he ran away towards Mt. Canyon where he found Maeve and Rei. The three lived on the mountain for years together and Fenn was happy there. Rei moved in with him after a while.

The Infernal is an alternate dimension filled with scorching rocks and smoldering magma. Very few creatures are capable of inhabiting it because of it's high temperatures. Usually, a creature from the over world would be required to use some form of heat tolerance potion or magic to enter it. To get there, one must find or make a portal and set it alight with a torch made of infernal lava rocks. Once there, one will encounter vicious creatures and entities, not all of which are known to the over world.

(Author Note: I hope you enjoyed the prologue, I wrote most of this months ago, even before the book was going to exist. I have four chapters written thus far, all 2,500-3,000 words long! It took me 3-ish months for that. First chapter is being uploaded next Friday, make sure you check it out then! -Kat

Hullo, I'm writing the sixth chapter. Can't get rid of me lol. - Wolfie)
