( HI GUYS!!!! I am so sorry this came so late, I had to travel with my family, then got sick (I still am), and now school is starting, AHHHHH!!! But here it is! This one is for StillAtlas! Hope you enjoy!!!)

When you hear the word "orphanage", what do you of?

Annie? Oliver Twist? Harry Potter? Hugo? Margo and her sisters?
Do you think of old woman who makes kids work, work, and work until they can't no more? Maybe you think of little orphans covered in soot, dreaming about a good life?

That's what Varian thought when he first got placed into the orphanage. He thought that there would be a snooty old lady who'd yell at kids telling them to do their work. He thought that nobody would want to adopt him, and he'd be stuck there forever. But then again, what do you expect from a curious three-year-old who's seen the movie 'Annie'?

                                                                                        ~

A grey sedan driving on 8th street, a father with his wife and three-year-old child in the backseat. A destination in mind, their almost there. Almost to their death. A truck, a truck driver not seeing where he was going, music blasting loud in his ears, unable to hear the screeching tires of the car Infront of him.

They collided.

The oil tank fell.

It exploded.

The car was on fire.

Two people died that day.

Quirin Anders and Ulla Anders.

Two people were severely injured that day.

Angelo Cartez (the truck driver) and Varian Anders.

Varian had no other relatives who wanted to or could take him in, so he was placed into the orphanage. Of course, the people who worked there tried to make Varian think everything was going to be okay, but Varian knew better. He knew that everything was the opposite of okay.

At the age of four years old, Varian got fostered by some dude named Feldspar and his wife Kristin. Apparently, he was too 'rambunctious' and 'crazy' for them when he was caught trying to test out a shoe-making invention that may or may not have caused a tiny weeny little itty bitty tiny little fire...And that caused him to be whisked back into the orphanage.

                                                                                    ~

And situations happened like that for the next ten years. Varian still wasn't adopted, and every home he went to, the parent(s) were abusive, and when he would try to tell someone, they would ignore him. Every scar on his body, every flinch, every cry, they would ignore it. It didn't matter how sweet the foster parent(s) sounded on the first day, they were always abusive in every way. So, Varian learned quickly to always keep is guard up. Always be alert and careful, and never let them see your weakness.

And he told that to himself every day. He repeated it in his mind over and over like a mantra. Like the rules of his life. Those were the rules he followed, and nobody else's. When they found out about alchemy, the boy's hobby, they thought he was a danger. When he tried to run away, they thought he was troubled. Of course, that's all anyone ever thought he was ever since he was thirteen. People only saw him as "that one kid with the troubled youth".

So, you wouldn't blame him when he heard that some couple named Rapunzel and Eugene were going to adopt him, Varian just scoffed and ignored it.

                                                                                            ~
A week passed, and Varian had to meet his 'foster parents' in the stupid room of the orphanage where all the kids met their possible parents. He walked into the room and glanced at the green metal chair that he was supposed to sit on, and glared at it, as it if personally offended him. He'd seen that chair so many times, and it never brought him any luck.

"Hi there! You must be Varian, right?" A way too cheery feminine voice said. Varian looked up; the voice came from a woman with bright blonde hair (probably dyed), emerald-green eyes, fair skin, and freckles splattered across her face. She looked exactly like one of those moms from one of those cookie-cutter homes.

'Well great.' Varian thought, completely ignoring the question. The blonde frowned slightly and looked over to a man whom Varian assumed was the blonde's husband. The man had almond brown hair (with probably twenty pounds of hair gel and creams on it), almond brown eyes, and a goatee. 'Just like Flynn Rider.'  Varian thought, reminiscing on his old childhood hero from the books he would read when he was a kid. He shook the thought off though, he was too big for those childish books.

"Varian is...A bit shy at the moment. Varian, why don't you say 'hi' to the Mr. and Mrs. Fitzherbert?" A social worker informed. 'Are you kidding me? Where the Hannah Montanah did this dude come from-' Varian raised an eyebrow skeptically at the social worker and rolled his eyes. "Varian, behave. These are very nice people willing to take you in. Please, where are your manors?" The young man urged.

"Hi." Varian stated, his expression unchanging. The blonde smiled fondly, and so did her husband. "So, the name's Eugene. Eugene Fitzherbert." The brown-haired man said. "And I'm Rapunzel!" The woman- Rapunzel grinned. Varian raised an eyebrow, basically saying 'do I look like I care?'

                                                                                            ~

Time passed by, and eventually Rapunzel and Eugene were approved to foster Varian. They got in the car, Eugene in the driver's seat, Rapunzel in the passenger's seat, and Varian on the left seat in the back. "So, Varian, got any music that you would like me to put on?" Eugene asked. Varian only shrugged and continued to look out the window of the car. Eugene looked at the car mirror, seeing Varian's shrug, and turned on some random country music.

The teen had expected the music to maybe stop the couple from talking to him, but he was wrong. They tried making conversation with him the whole ride, and the longest sentence he said was "Don't care."

                                                                                              ~

Rapunzel knew what she was doing when she wanted to Varian. Even if this was her first time with the "troubled youth", she cared. And her husband cared too.

Eugene saw how Varian reacted to kindness. The teen was unsure if it was a trap or not. Eugene saw how Varian was always careful in what he said, even though he tried to make himself sound careless.

And Eugene saw how Varian reacted to touch, which was the worst of all. He remembered how when he put a hand on Varian's shoulder, the boy flinched hard.

They found out that he was into science and was good at it. Engineering, alchemy, a bit of chemistry, this kid was a mastermind!

When they put him in school, the kid actually skipped a couple grades! Of course, there were a few lash-outs from the kid, but honestly, what do you expect?

Either way, Rapunzel and Eugene loved Varian like their own- In fact, they adopted him not long after! Even though Varian has never really opened up to them yet, they know he will in his own time.

They adopted three more kids, one by the name of Noah (5 years old), another by the name of Cassidy (9 years old), and finally, Avery who was 10.

Later on, Rapunzel had two kids of her own, twins. One named Tobias and the other named Lilliane.

Varian was the oldest, and he enjoyed teaching his siblings science, and protecting them from harm's way. He loved his family, even though it was chaotic at times, and mixed up, they were family.

Different kids with different personalities, and two loving parents, all patched up together like a patchwork quilt. Sown together forever.
