"Oops! dude, I think we are not going to make it this morning" Brian texted me as I was rushing into the bathroom. I never get time to respond to him at that moment, because mom and dad were already sitting in the car, and I had to go open the gate for them.
"Jimmy! Ji,,y... " mom was calling me with all her energy. She is one of the most energetic women I've ever met. Dad was such a quiet man. I could barely hear him speaking. When I was young, he used to read me some books before going to sleep, though he wasn't that good at reading funny stories. When I read some of the books that he read to me, I find the tone to be totally different from when he read them. He was good at turning funny stories into completely horrible made-ups.
"Son, you are developing a bad habit. Why do I always have to wake you up?" she said handing me the keys. I was standing in front of the front door of the car, directly on mom's side. "Next week, your cousin is coming here. You better learn to be a nice kid" She said as dad hit the accelerator.
My parents didn't know that I don't even spend an hour sitting at home alone. Sometimes Brian comes, but most of the time I join him, or we both go away from our homes.
"How is the T-shirt?" Brian asked me. I was totally surprised at how the boy I used to know, the boy who never cared about what he wears was now very concerned. "Wait, what do you want me to tell you? How tightly is it squeezing you? I mean, what are you doing anyways?" I said to him in a very serious tone. I wasn't happy with his unusual behavior. "Look man, stop hyping things bruh, you don't even know whether or not you are going to meet the girl" I exclaimed throwing the jacket I was holding down on the sofa.
"Well, ok,.. We can go now" Brian said. Brain and I were close in age, but I was one year older than him. I used that difference as a tool to make him stay in his usual mood. "Wait, it's true that we are going to find the girl of your dreams, but am confused. Do you know where she lives? Or do you even know her name?" I asked Brian thinking that he knew nothing about the girl. I met Brian when I was 10. We were new to the quarter and the only neighbors we had was Brian's family. The area was new and many people hadn't yet come to live there.
"Well, I know you are accusing me of many sins; liking the girl I've only met one time; changing my behaviors, and what you are just thinking right now...but, mn, you know.., Eve was my seatmate in primary4. I knew her when she was still a very young girl... but now she has grown into a beautiful lady. I for sure don't know how to put this.., but I wish I liked her when we were still together in school, it should have been easy for me to tell her." Brian said in a drenched voice. I was then calmed, but surprised to learn that he even knew her name.
"So, you also know where she lives?"
"Obviously"
It was 3 pm and the evening sunshine was directly above our heads. We were moving to a place that, for God's sake, I saw for the first time. I was behind Brian, just following his every step. "Aren't we there yet?" I asked him and without turning around, he replied "we are almost there. Yeah... that blue gate" he pointed to the small gate which was in front of us.
"Have you ever been here before?" I asked him.
"Yeah, I used to have home-schooling with her before I meet you"
"So what stopped you?"
"Her parents decided that she has to change the school, then it was not possible to continue together."
"Why aren't you knocking?" I asked Brian who was just staring at the door. He thought for a second and then said smiling "I just remembered that it's your turn to knock. Remember last week when we went to Auntie Mimi's, I was the one who knocked, and you know how the sequence goes." I burst into a peal of laughter and not knowing how I reached the door, I knocked relentlessly.
"Who is this?" A female voice said. Brian adjusted his T-shirt and lowered his voice. He answered "It's me Brian" The young woman opened the gate. She was very cute, as I can say. I never noticed her dainty face the first time at the market. This time, she was wearing big jeans, and a blue shirt covering her arms. The two went on, and I was just behind following them.
"So tell me, Brian, how have you been?" Eve asked scanning the cupboard which was right behind us. "I think am the one who's supposed to ask you that. How have you been?" Brian said frankly. I was just surprised by how open he was at that moment, maybe he was no longer shy because they were familiar or maybe he was trying to convince me of his manliness.
Eve served us cold mango juice, which was my favorite. I don't know how this coincided with her thoughts or did anyone told her that I was coming that day? Anyway, she even know nothing about me, how was she going to know about what I liked? I spent time dangling my thoughts on that as well as enjoying the juice. "Brian!" I hissed. "Don't forget what brought us here." we exchanged a bogus smile before Eve turns back.
As she came, I realized that I had to give them space. She already knew something about me, because we had talked about it when Brian introduced me to her. There was no need for me to stay there, instead, it was the time for Brian to hit the jackpot. I took the remote and approached the screen, leaving the two together. I wandered all the channels, I could hardly find the best one to watch. I ended up watching the woman's show on KC2, but I didn't even care, my mind was concentrated on what was going on on the other side. Well, nothing unusual was happening, they were just talking. I waited for the boy to tell me that we are leaving, but it was like beating a dead horse. I humbled myself because I knew that Brian was finally going to tell his feelings to the girl. He was going to be relieved as his heaviest burden was going to be removed. I knew how important this occasion was to Brian.
