"Pardon me for asking this Milord but, why did you refuse to go with Sir Gazef?" The village chief asked me.

After Gazef and his men took the two knights that I spared, the village had a celebration of some sorts.

I merely stayed in front of the large fire, admiring the swaying flames.

'Hahhh, I miss watching TV.'

"I am fairly certain that I will be meeting the King if I do so. I am not one to dwell into politics, and I prefer to stay that way." I replied.

Not really the king, rather his eldest son and the nobles.

They are after all, in cahoots with the Eight Fingers, an organization that controls not just the Kingdom's but also the Empire's underworld.

One of these days, I know I have to deal with them, I just don't know how.

"And besides, I....I might have inadvertently put your village in danger." I said, turning towards the village chief.

".....is it because you saved us? Could it be...because of nobles?" The village chief grimaced as he clenched his fists.

"So you have noticed." I replied.

"I...had an inkling...that we are merely collateral damages to whatever ploy made by them. I just couldn't help but feel suspicions after we've been attacked, by knights nonetheless." The village chief was shaking at this point.

"....."

What do I say? I don't think I have something comforting to say. Other than...

"I have promised you didn't I."

The village chief's shoulder jolted, before turning his head towards me.

"I have promised you that I will never let any of you die, and I meant it. And I have already declared that you are under my protection when I took care of the Knights."

His eyes lit up when I said those, also now that I think about it, I feel stares behind my back.

Looks like the people have been eavesdropping.

A Few Hours later

It was already past midnight when the celebration ended.

Midway, the party somehow became more intense, livelier in fact. I'm guessing it was those said those words were overheard by the rest of the villagers.

Every adult was either passed out drunk or still going, but as I gaze at the stars on top of the village chief's house, I don't seem to hear or sense someone awake.

I know I can't sleep, even now I feel...afraid.

I have to admit, during the party, I was thinking of nothing but those I've killed.

I don't think I can afford having a nightmare right now. Especially now that I have these... destructive powers.

I know myself better than anyone. And when I have I nightmare, I end up flailing around in my sleep.

Being alone with my thoughts isn't likable too though....I...need a distraction.

"Oh yeah, I did plan on practicing how to fly." I said to myself.

Standing up, I focused my senses again, trying to feel any gaze. Fortunately, none came up.

I need to train this "sixth sense", it's a very convenient ability to hone.

I focused on my wings, imagining them emerging from my back.

Then, there was this satisfying feeling on my back, the feeling of stretching your limbs after a goodnight's sleep.
