Adalia wanted to be free, she hated being cooped up in her family's estate. Its a rare thing to hear from someone of such high status. Normally they'd like being spoiled and doted over, but not Adalia. She longed for the water. Her bedroom window overlooked the vast stretch of earth that was the ocean. The breeze on her face, the wind in her hair. Not the stilled air of the land."Ms Adalia, come sit down so I can brush your hair. Its all messy"
She turned around from her look over the balcony to where one of the family's maids was standing. An older woman in her mid 50s. She wore a modest black with a long, ankle length skirt with long sleeves. Along with a white apron. Her hair was tied back in a bun.
Adalia nodded and walked back into the room, avoiding the flowing white curtains. She sat down on the four legged stool, facing the mirror. She hated having her hair brushed. She also hated the maid. Adalia was the easily annoyed type. The type no one wanted to be around, which she saw as a plus because she'd rather be alone then be surrounded by stuck up, snobby people.
"Go ahead" she told the maid. The woman in the black dress walked over and stool behind her. She got the hairbrush from the drawer in the desk and started brushing Adalia's hair. The boar hair bristles made quick work of her hair. It wasn't as tangled as the maid said it was...
Adalia stared at herself in the mirror. She normally didn't like looking at herself. She was never the families favourite, she was also the youngest. Which meant there was zero chance she would inherit anything or grow into any other roll then princess.
"Eleanor?" Adalia asked, her eyes drawing upwards in the mirror to see the maid's face. Her almond shaped eyes met with the maid's monolid eyes.
"Yes miss?" Eleanor responded. She finished brushing Adalia's hair and had put the brush down. She pulled a light blue ribbon from the same drawer and started styling the young girls caramel hair.
"Do you also hate being confined in this estate?" she asked. She studied the maid's expression, her small nose and thin, well maintained eyebrows. None of them moved to show the slightest expression. All the maid's were trained and told to not show any feelings that would make them look human. They always had to look fake, like dolls. Ready to do your bidding with each command.
"Nonsense Miss. Stop it with that foolish chatter of yours.." The maid replied. Sectioning off part of her hair to tie in a twisted bun, leaving the front section of her hair to curtain her heart shaped face. "The queen and king expect you to not mention any of this to your husband. He's already come in for your wedding. They expect you to be on your best behavior"
Adalia's heart sank in her chest. She forgot her parents expected her to marry a man she's never met before. The only thing she knew about him was that he was the king of some far away land full of riches. It would do well for his land to share its riches with hers. He was probably as stuck up and snobby as all the other royals.
Its not like this hadn't happened before. They tried to marry her off tons of times. Each time she tried to scare them off and disgust them and it normally worked. Maybe she would try the same with him
"And before you say anything, this noble has promised marry you despite your attitude. I heard he doesnt take no for an answer" Eleanor told her. Her plans were already foiled.
"So im here to get you all ready for your chance to meet your groom" said the maid. With a clap of her frail hands, another maid entered the room with a silk white dress. A wedding dress. It has a flawless trim and long, flowy sleeves.
"No..." Adalia said plainly, she wouldn't be caught dead in that. It made her look too expensive, more like a prize to be bought and put on display. The maids had to team up and hold her still to smuggle the dress onto her.
