"Welcome to New York City!", I hear as I wake up, trying to remember where I am. I look around, remembering I'm on a plane and feeling anxious once again. God, my anxiety cannot handle this. I feel as the wheels touch the ground causing a loud thump, making both the plane and my insides shake. I put my head between my knees, feeling the eyes of my neighbor boring into my back. "Are you okay?" I hear a quiet voice ask me. I looked up to see a man, who I did not remember seeing when I sat down, looking down at me. His highlighted brown hair falls forward as he bends slightly with me, concern etched into his face. "Hey, I get it, I hate planes too." His French accent becomes apparent the second time he speaks.
I sit up slightly, looking fully at his face. He pushes his medium length hair behind his ears, showing his dark brown eyes. "I'm okay, sorry, just the landing made me nauseous."
"I get it, it's okay. I've never liked planes but I go on them all the time for work." He laughs, and I laugh quietly with him, picking at my cuticles as I go to look out the small plane window. The large airport surrounds the plane as we pull into a gate. The plane shakes as they open the door, and then they announce that we can get out. I stand, waiting for the man in front of me to get out. He turns and looks at me, asking if I have any luggage above head. I tell him yes, and he grabs it for me. "Thank you," I say, a smile forming on my lips, "What's your name?"
"I'm Theo! I'm guessing your name is Marcie?" He says, eyes flickering to my bag, which has my name sewed into the side.
"Well, Marceline, but I go by Marcie."
"Pretty name," he exclaims, a smile forming on his lips. We walk to the exit door, walking through the large tube hallway thing. When we get out, I take a deep breath, stretching my back. "So, are you here to v-"
Theo is cut off by Ellie running up to me and hugging me. "God, I hope you slept through that. That was SUCH a bumpy ride! I hated it." She whines, before letting me go and gasping once her eyes fall on Theo. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't see you there. I'm Ellie, who are you?"
They introduce each other as my eyes fall on the huge glass windows, the scenery blowing my mind. Ellie snaps me out of my thoughts, a worried look apparent on her face. "It's so pretty," I gasp out, my eyes continuing to scan the mountains.
"Just wait until the city. Less mountains, but a lot of lights and things. Gorgeous." Ellie replies, slinging an arm at my shoulder. I giggle at the action, amazed at how she can get so comfortable with me in such a short amount of time. I mean, I didn't mind, I liked her a lot, but usually people didn't like talking to me.
As the three of us walk towards the exit, I text my mom, saying that we landed. I tell her that I've made new friends, to which she tells me to call her ASAP with 13 exclamation points and a heart eye emoji. I giggle and roll my eyes, stopping short in my tracks when I feel someone in front of me. "Oh, I-I'm sorry, I didn't see you there."
The man glances down at me, quirking his eyebrow. He opens his mouth to say something, but it snaps shut as Theo bounces on him. I go to yell at him, thinking he was just pouncing on this poor man to defend me, before he cries out, "Big brother! I've missed you!"
Ellie looks at me, eyebrows raised at my expression. "Let me up." The man replies gruffly, probably agitated to be laying on the airport floor. Theo apologizes and stands up, sheepishly giving his brother a hand, which he ignores. He dusts himself off, and that's when I notice he's wearing a suit and tie. Weird outfit to wear to the airport, but whatever. I turn at a tap on my shoulder, seeing Ellie with her mouth wide open. I go to ask why, but then she squeals and pulls me away swiftly. Behind us, Theo and his brother stand in shock and she drags me along, practically running, to the bathroom.
