"They're never going to make it!" I heard someone say as I walked past, followed by laughter. All I could hear around me was someone saying something to that extent. I guess that's what you get in high school. Today is my last official day in school since I'll be transitioning to online school starting Monday.
The big talk of the school is about how my best friend and I got signed to a record label. As the stigma would have it, everyone seems to think we won't make it. Personally, I feel like if that were the case we wouldn't be signed to such a major label.
I'm sure you're wondering if this was overnight success. Well, it wasn't. It was years of hard work together as part of a larger band. Before we split up, I was the front woman of the band while Mack, my best friend, was the drummer. One day I walked in on Mack one of the songs we had written, and despite being best friends with her for 6 years, I had no idea she could sing so well.
So, we started writing songs together and practicing things on our own. The two of us doing vocals with me on guitar, and Mack on the drums. It started to feel right that it was just us. We started posting our songs online and for months we saw no results. Until one song, titled "Til Tomorrow" blew up. Not even a week later, we heard it on the radio. Numerous record labels reached out to us wanting to hear more of our demos, and we submitted them until we got a response we were satisfied with.
That was about 3 months ago, and since then we've been regularly flying out to New York to record new demos. The label said they'll put us both into online school since we both want to graduate high school, and then we can work full-time on music.
I kept walking down the hallway with people pointing and staring at me. Then I walked past my band mates who are still upset about the whole going off on our own thing. I try not to look in their direction, but Troy gets in my path.
"You and Mack aren't going to get farther than you already have. Til Tomorrow was a one hit wonder and you guys will never go anywhere without us!", he said.
"Quite frankly, I don't care about your opinion. But thanks anyways", I said as I walked around him and continued on my way to class.
It wasn't long before Mack caught my eye with her dazzling smile that had Hollywood written all over it.
