"Put it out! Somebody put it out!" My father yelled as we watched our house burn six feet under.
Our house had gone up in flames when my cat, Skittles, knocked over a candle causing it to land on the carpet. I tried to stop the fire by stomping my foot on the carpet, but it made it worst. As a result, I got some water, and that's when everything went downhill. The carpet rapidly sparked with flames and soon it was out of control. The fire spread too quickly for my parents and me to stop it, so we grabbed Skittles and phoned the fire department.
I was holding my mother tightly as she sobbed. What was going to happen now? We lost everything we had, even if what we had was very little. As I watched my house spark into uncontrollable flames, the images of my room kept replaying inside my head. All of the toys I grew up with and all the books I read were burning to ash, and I couldn't help but cry. I couldn't help myself, and I could only imagine how my parents were feeling.
They were the ones who lost everything. The lost all their family photos including those from their marriage fifteen years ago. For them, the photos that brought back happy memories would be gone in a matter of seconds. I did not know what was going to happen, and I must admit I was scared. Once the fire department began to wash the flames, I watched as everything I've ever known turn to rubble.
As the firemen were finishing washing away the flames, the house was nothing but black dust waiting to be taken away by the wind. There was nothing left of that house: no books, no kitchen, nothing, just ashes.
Staring at the remains of the house, I didn't notice a man in a black coat come to us. I assumed he was the chief.
"Well, Mr. and Mrs. Ferranti the house is obviously unsuitable to live in, and you will have to ask King Damien for another residence."
My parents nodded in agreement as he then turned to me speaking.
"Who are you?"
I didn't answer, and he flashed me a smile bearing fangs. A vampire.
"My my! If I didn't know any better, I would say that you are the daughter of these two." He said directing the last bit to my parents.
"How old are you?"
"Don't answer him, Claire!" My mother snapped.
"Now now...there is no need to be feisty. Afterall, I can read minds." I said as he wagged his index finger back and forth.
My parents begged him not to use his ability, but he just laughed.
"It's already too late not to mention it's a part of my job. So Claire Ferranti is turning twenty tomorrow, and you have been keeping her hidden, eh?"
I could feel a nervousness creep into my body, and when I looked at my parents their expressions weren't helping. The man then signaled for another vampire to arrest us. When I saw the handcuffs, I tried to run, but who was I kidding? I was caught in less than a second. Without another word, the chief and I were walking toward the castle while my parents headed in the opposite direction.
"Where are you taking my parents?!" I finally said.
"To their deaths. Hiding future slaves is considered treason, and the punishment is death." He said.
I wanted to cry, and I felt that if I did, I could fill an entire bucket with my tears. Who cared what happened to me? The only thing I was worried about were my parents and from a distance I heard them both say "we love you" and "we are so sorry". This can't be happening was all I could think to myself. This felt so surreal, so unfair, and I found myself wondering why. If I knew what I did now, I would have said "I love you."
