"MEEEEELLLLLLLL!" Yelled a tall, humanoid, red-fox with bright green eyes as he ran throughout the house. "MELODY HUGHES!!! Where are you, you winged jerk?!" He yelled again. As he ran through the living room of the house, the green-eye fox tripped and felled right onto his muzzle. Curled up together on the couch that the fox had just fallen in front of, were a young boy and girl who, at the expense of the fox, were laughing hysterically.
"Nice going there Venour." Said the boy still chuckling.
"Yeah," giggled the girl, "What did Mel do to you this time anyways, Ven?"
Venour groaned and looked at the boy, "Shut up Dillon." Dillon stuck his tongue out at Ven as Venour stood and turned his head to look at the girl. "And in response to you Skyler, the brat decided that dying my tail purple to match her eyes would be a good idea." He said as he deadpanned and turned to show the two his now bright purple tail.
It was at this moment that the three could hear a quiet giggle, and Ven took off running again. After a few seconds, the two sitting on the couch heard a yell. "Noooooo! Ven! Get off! Stop tickling me you butt!!!" Followed by an immense amount of laughter and then a loud crash. The two humans raced into the main entryway to see what all the commotion was about. Upon entrance, they found Venour nailed to the wall and a young girl with huge, black, feathery wings, along with purple eyes and a silver streak in her hair, hovering on the other side of the room, opposite the fox. This was all it took for Dil and Sky to lose it again, and they both fell to the ground with laughter.
"Mel! Get me down!" Ven yelled.
"No! You decided to tickle me!" Mel yelled back
"Well you dyed my tail purple!"
"And now it matches my eyes!"
"But it doesn't match me now does it?!"
"Well-!" Mel began as Sky interrupted her.
"Calm yourselves! Both of you!" She said while trying not to laugh. "Somebody needs to make a store run guys." All four look at each other for a moment before Dillon yelled.
"Nose goes!" causing all four to scramble to get a finger on their nose. Ven was the last to touch his nose.
"Really?! You have got to be kidding me!!!" He yelled and began wiggling around causing the nail he was hung on to come out of the wall, and, for the second time that day, Venour fell onto his muzzle. This caused another round of laughter, and a worried Melody to run over and check on the fox to make sure he didn't break anything. She was muttering "I'm-sorries" the entire way. Just before Venour left, Mel offered to go with, and the two set off to the store.

Venour pulled up to the store at the same time that he heard a sigh from the passenger seat. He shut off the truck and looked over to the winged girl sitting next to him. "What's wrong my dear?"
Mel peered at him with sad eyes. "Do we really have to go in? You know what will happen. It always happens." She sighed again and looked away. Venour sighed as well, and leaned over the center console of the truck and wrapped Melody in a hug.
"We'll be okay. Besides, if we never go inside, then we're just proving to them all that they're words can affect us. We've gotta go in so that they know that we should have the same rights as any pure-blood human has, Love." He said as he buried his muzzle into Melody's hair. "We'll be okay." He whispered again. The two sat like that for a moment before they finally decided to make their way inside.
As Venour and Melody stepped into the entryway, all chatter in the small grocery store ceased. The silence was deafening, and every face there was turned towards the two, staring. Mothers and fathers pulled their pointing children away while shushing them. Elders shook their heads. Young men tried to buff themselves up for the intimidation factor much like roosters would fluff up their feathers. Everyone seemed to be against them, for people feared what they could not understand.
After a moment, Ven leaned over and whispered into Melody's ear, "Don't pay any attention to them. They're just testing us." He then stood up to his full height, a full head taller than Mel, and began walking down the aisles of food. Mel quickly grabbed a basket and followed behind the now purple tailed fox.
As the two walked up and down the aisles gathering all the food they needed, many pairs of eyes followed their every move. "Ven," Mel whispered, "They're watching us." At this, Ven looked around and met the eyes of all those who were watching them with a glare. Soon they began heading towards the checkout counter. Standing in a circle around one of the registers, were all of the checkout clerks.
As the two approached the register, the clerks just stood there and stared. Finally, one spoke up, "What do you want?" he asked harshly and then muttered to the clerk beside him, "Freaks."
Mel flinched and hid behind Ven as his gaze hardened. "We would like to check out please." Venour said with a straight face, never faltering.
Another clerk chose this moment to speak up. "And why would we do that for you freaks? You don't belong here." She said just as harshly as the first clerk.
Mel gathered up her courage and spoke up in a small voice from her spot behind Ven. "We're not freaks, we're just like you."
By this moment, the group had drawn in a sizeable crowd. A young girl of about seven managed to wiggle out of her mother's grasp and run over to the two experiments. Once she reached the two, she stretched one of her arms out, and began gently touching one of Melody's large, black, feathery wings.
"I like your wings, Miss." The young girl said politely. The crowd that had come to surround them, fell silent. Even the mother of the young girl was mortified into a stunned silence, along with Venour and Melody. Although, the gently touches on her wing made Mel begin to purr, much like a cat that was being pet.
After a few moments, Melody finally regained her bearings and kneeled down to the young girl's height. "Well hello there, pretty lady," She smiled and reached up to begin petting the young girl's hair. "I like your hair."
When Mel had reached up to touch the little girl's hair, the mother began to rush forward from the gathered crowd, only to run into Ven's well-built chest. Mel noticed this and removed her hand from the top of the child's head. "Hey, Little-Bitty, I think your momma misses you." She told the young girl as she stood up and motioned for Venour to move. Once he did, the mother rushed forward a second time, successfully grabbing her daughter and pulling her away.
As the mother pulled her child away, the crowd also began to part a pathway to one of the registers. No words were said between anyone in the store, but the air of hatred seemed to lift, even if it was only slightly. It didn't take long for Venour and Melody to get checked out and begin making their way to Venour's truck.
As they were driving home, Mel decided to speak up, for they had not said a word since the incident. "Love?" She questioned. Ven only grunted in reply, signaling her to continue. Melody sighed, "Why wasn't the little girl afraid of us? Of you?" She looked away and sighed. "Of me?"
Ven kept quiet until they were parked in the driveway. "It seems to be that the younger generations' minds are more open and accepting of us." He looked at Mel. "The world is changing, My Dear." He smiled. "It's changing for the better." At this, Mel smiled as well, and they hugged each other over the center console of the truck. Only this time, it was out of happiness.
