Prologue

[ 7:28 , Nov 6th ]

"Goodbye mom!" Sage and William both yelled in sync.

"Bye! Have a good day!" Joyce yelled back, waving as two of her kids exited through the front door.

Sage reached in her pocket, grabbing her keys. "You ready?" She asked.

"Yup!" Her little brother responded, opening the passenger door and hopping in.

Sage went and got in on her side, putting a key in the ignition and starting her car.

"Sage..?" Will asked, there was a sudden shift in his tone of voice. Dread. Or sadness. She couldn't tell, Sage had never been good at reading emotion.

"Yea?" She responded, looking at her brother in confusion. "What's up?.."

"Do you think they'll ever find out?" He asked quietly, fiddling with his thumbs anxiously.

A sudden realization struck Sage. She sucked in a harsh breath.

"No.." She swallowed.

Will froze. "You're lying."

"No?.."

"Sage-.." He whispered. "They know.. don't they?"

Sage closed her eyes, turning her head away from will. "They won't take me alive."

"Like that makes it any better?" Will said, "So either you die or they take you. There's no win in this situation." He stated bluntly.

"They don't know enough.." She said, backing her car out of the driveway. "I'm not leaving you guys."

"What happens if they do find you? And they do take you? What then?" He asked quietly, looking out the window.

"They won't. And if they do, I can just burn them to a crisp." She shrugged, stopping her car at a stop sign.

Sage's response earned a little giggle from Will. "Human flamethrower." He muttered to himself.

"Hey I heard that!"

"Well I'm not lyingggg......." Will giggled again.

"I love you shithead." Sage smiled, continuing her way to school.

"I love you too.... human flamethrower." Will whispered the last part.

"You ass." Sage took a hand off her wheel and playfully hit Will in the arm.

"Careful you might burn me." He joked.

"Might do it on purpose, Mr. Bowlcut." Sage laughed.

"You wouldn't." Will said.

"No I won't. That is unless you take my LOTR books again. Then you'll see real human flamethrower." She muttered,

"You wouldn't.. right.. even if I possibly have one of your books right now?" Will asked nervously.

"Obviously not."

"Good."

"Blah blah." Sage muttered to herself before entering the parking lot of Hawkins Elementary.

"Johnathan will pick you up after school. Love you, be safe, don't get yourself into trouble." Sage unlocked the doors.

"Love you toooooo!" Will grabbed his backpack and exited the car.
