Korra had no idea what time it was when Mako angrily barged in through the door. When she looked outside, it seemed to be around the evening, which means she had been painting for hours without notice. It was her day off duty, and usually when her boyfriend had a shift on those she'd use that time for painting. The issue was, that when she did, she usually wouldn't answer her phone. And today, not for the first time, she hadn't been available for an entire day. Mako and her fought about it plenty before, as he absolutely hated not being able to reach her for so long. So, when she saw him barge into her apartment, she assumed her boyfriend was here to yell at her for not answering him, again.
But she was wrong.
"Have you been on your phone?" He urgently asked her as soon as he walked in.
"No," she stood up, "I'm so sorry, I didn't notice the time–"
"You should really check your phone." He deadpanned.
"Um," Korra was confused. Why would she need to check her phone? Couldn't he just tell her in person? "Okay, I guess." She mumbled, wiping off paint from her hands and grabbing her phone, baffled by her boyfriend's attitude. What was up with that guy?
But the moment she opened her phone, she realized why. In the few hours she wasn't around her phone, she had gotten 5,893 notifications from Instagram alone, and that not including the thousands from Twitter, tiktok, Facebook (she never even opened Facebook!) etc. She turned back to look at Mako, stunned, but he just seemed angry. What the hell was going on?
"Mako," she said, as calmly as she could, "why do I have about six thousand new follow requests on Instagram?"
"Dammit!" He exclaimed, making Korra jump in surprise. "Sorry, I just... it's my ex."
"Your ex... is six thousand people trying to follow me on Instagram?" Korra sarcastically replied, her eyes narrowing as she proceeded to scroll through the never-ending notifications on her phone. What the fuck?
"No," he pinched the bridge of his nose, "my ex name dropped you in her new song."
Korra snorted. "What? The singer?" She said, amused. "No way that's it, why would anyone care if a small artist mentioned me in a song? You said so yourself; nobody even knows her." She chuckled softly, though her entertained smile was fading slowly, as she watched the color drain out of Mako's face.
"So...yeah... about that." Mako mumbled, shifting his weight between his feet uncomfortably.
"About what?" Korra blinked, her anxiety level starting to rise. "Mako, who the hell is your ex?"
"Remember how I told you she's just a not very well known singer when the two of us began dating?" Her boyfriend awkwardly said. "Yeah, that's... not the situation anymore. She had gotten pretty famous since."
"Mako." Korra said his name slowly. "Who. The fuck. Is. Your ex?"
"Ever heard of Prince-S?" He asked.
Korra nearly dropped her phone.
Prince-S. Of course she heard of her, who didn’t? Probably one of the most iconic up-and-coming stars in the gay community, who also had somewhat of a cult following within the straight community, especially due to her mysterious persona. She was a fucking phenomenon! Being bisexual herself, Korra wasn’t immune to her charms. Even when she constantly wore a domino mask while performing, she was probably one of the hottest celebrities ever. Or at least, Korra thought so.
"You're kidding." She said in all seriousness. "Mako, please tell me you're kidding."
"I'm not kidding."
