1st person POV
Set after they all become friends with Jax again. It had been a while since we had started hanging out with Jax and his friends again, and Jax was clearly still a horrible person, even if he was slightly better than he used to be. We'd decided to keep hanging around him out of fear of people hating us again, but we had also agreed to keep ourselves from getting attached. I had never been particularly good at that.
It was lunchtime, and I was walking through the school towards the cafeteria so that I could buy a fizzy water and go outside. I was almost down the stairs when someone grabbed my arm, I looked up to see who it was. Jax looked back at me, smiling, "Hey M, where are ya going?" He asked. I smiled back at him and replied, "The cafeteria, I have to get outside somehow." He laughed and started walking down the stairs with me, but never let go of my arm.
"How was SOSE?" He asked, pulling my arm slightly to speed me up.
"What do you think?"
"Boring, with work that's impossible to understand?"
"Exactly. It's impossible and is definitely going to be the worst of my grades this term."
"No matter how much you hate it, I'm sure you'll do fine."
"Sure, if fine means a D"
"You're being overdramatic, last term you got a B and complained about the work ten times more."
"It hasn't gotten easier, I've just gotten used to it."
"That'll still get you a B at least."
"Fine." I glared at him, warning him not to say another word. We'd reached the cafeteria and in the end I'd decided I wouldn't get a fizzy water, so we headed outside to sit with the others. We were talking about what we were doing that afternoon when I said something about how I was going to be at the mall alone that afternoon. I was pretty excited cause I hadn't been alone after school for ages. Jax piped up about how he was going to the mall too, and we decided that we'd meet each other after school and go to Belconnen together.
---------------------
After school, I went up to the bus stop to meet up with Jax in the exact place we'd agreed upon. A few minutes later Jax showed up, and we sat talking for a few minutes before the bus came. The bus arrived, but there weren't any places where we could sit near each other, so we just texted until we arrived at the mall.
We got off the bus and went into the mall, where we decided to buy some boba and sit down at a bench outside. While we waited for our order to be ready, we talked about our personal lives and ended up talking about crushes and stuff. Jax had just asked me if I had a crush on anyone when we got called to get our drinks. We grabbed our drinks and walked outside, where we decided to take a long walk around the lake, where it would be peaceful and secluded. The mall had been quiet compared to usual, (I hadn't been there on a Wednesday before, so I didn't know if it was normal or if today was different) but the area surrounding the lake was practically empty.
As we walked around we found a nice bench to sit on where we could look at the lake while we drank our tea. We sat down and Jax asked me again, "So do you have a crush on anyone?"
"Maybe, how about you?"
"Yep."
"Who?"
"You tell me first!"
"Nope, never."
"Telllllll meeeeee." he pouted slightly. I laughed and shoved him a bit.
"I'll tell you if you tell me." I giggled and smiled at him, hoping I looked just evil enough to get the point across, but not too intimidating.
"Okay, let's play a guessing game, you have twenty questions, but they have to be yes or no answers. If you guess it then you tell me second, if you don't, you tell me first."
"Let's go."
I thought of my questions carefully before asking them, since I had the time to think, but no questions to waste. It didn't take long to ask my first questions, but the others were harder. "Is it someone in our friend group?" I asked after a few seconds of thinking, "Yep," he replied, "Took you long enough, ask the rest of the questions faster." I laughed, "No chance, I am going to ask the right questions, no matter how long it takes."
A few minutes passed.
"Are they non-binary?"
"Yep. That's two questions."
"Do they use they/them?"
"Yep. That's three."
"Do they use she/her?"
"Nope. Four."
"Do they use he/him"
"Yep. Five."
"Are they in the area of your friend group that's friends with Alice and co?"
"Not really, though they hang out with us occasionally. Six."
"Are they in the area of your friend group that's friends with Salem?"
"Yep. Seven."
"Okay, are they in the same system as Salem?"
"Nope. Eight."
"Is it Theo?"
"I barely know them, nope. Nine."
"Are they in the same system as me?"
"Yep. Ten."
"Okayy, so it's Geo?"
"Nope. Eleven."
"Well that only leaves-"
"You."
"Well yeah but it's not me, so who is it?"
"It is you though." Jax said, and smiled at me. I looked at him in disbelief, I hated everything about him, but I was always one to question my own head. So maybe I did like him? Well it didn't really matter, this was the perfect chance to finally force myself into a relationship. "Are you sure you're not pranking me?" I asked and leaned forward a bit, doing what I hoped was a jokingly suspicious face. "I am sure that I'm not pranking you. We can pretend that this never happened if you want, but I'm telling the truth."
We sat in a slightly awkward silence for a few minutes before he started talking again like it never happened. "So, I told you who I like, now you tell me who you like." I sat there for a minute, the person I was planning on telling him I liked was Robin from Stranger Things, then telling him I don't actually have a crush. But this was my chance to force myself into a relationship, and get used to all of the gross kissing and other things that I'd have to do in a relationship. I looked up at him and decided that he was my new crush, fairly easy, now that hard part, actually telling him that I liked him.
I looked away for a moment, then looked at him again. He looked back at me and smiled, I smiled too and slowly leaned forward. Our faces were an inch apart and I saw every detail of his reaction when I whispered, "You."
The shock was clear on his face, and he sat completely still for a minute, before leaning forward and kissing me. I hated every second of it, but I kissed back, and when he pulled away and smiled at me, I smiled back. When he held my hand the next day at school, I gripped his hand back. When he kissed me again after school while I was waiting for my parents, I kissed him back. Months and months of smiling, and kissing, and hand-holding, and much, much more.
I know it's going to get better, I'll get used to it. It has to, I have to.
