The beginning

Sometimes things just happen and we don't know how or why they just happen to the best and worst of us. My Wife had passed away a few months ago. No children of our own and not wanting to be with another partner at the moment I decided to adopt. Group 1 adoption agency. Just like any other adoption agency they lacked funding. When they saw Doctor on my profile they assumed I had money which made the process much easier. I didn't want a new born baby or a teenager. I thought I would go for a 5-7 year old. As we walked towards the children section you could hear the baby screams and smell the dirty diapers. Which is normal I suppose. We went from child to child. I got a brief introduction of each child.  I stopped and looked at this one child and Mr. Claws who is helping me to adopt a child just walked pass this child. Like he intentionally skipped the child. I asked him, "what about this child?" He said, "no Doctor that is the (and he whispered) bad luck kid."  And I whispered, "what does that mean?". He said, "bad luck" and I said "I know what bad luck means. Why do you call the kid the bad luck kid?" "Well to start he (he didn't even need to open the profile it was like he knew everything about this child by heart)  his mother was raped probably by a gangster, thug or hooligan. She died during childbirth and he has been here ever since. This child has also been adopted 5 times and brought back within 1 week or sooner. Some say this child is cursed. Need I say more." " You may continue," I urged. "The child is 10 years old. For some reason every house this child goes to get's burglarized or burnt down. Probably his dad trying to get him back I don't know but they always bring him back." "Has this place ever been been broken into or burnt down?" I asked. "Not that I know of," he shrugged in response. "Next on the list is a cutie pie you will just fall in love with her," he continues. As we went to the next child Mr. Claws kept talking on and on. My attention was on that child. I watched him get off the bed walk all the way down the hall and I thought where is this child going? Must be the toilet I suppose. "I have a question Mr. Claws if you can answer me honestly I will adopt a child today." "My goodness Doctor has this one stolen your heart to that extent? You can ask me anything, anything at all." "That child over there," I motioned to where the previous child had been. "You think his father is trying to get him but yet this place has never been broken into, burnt down or robbed! is that correct?" "Yes Doctor that is correct," he confirmed. "Okay that is all wanted to know."  "So will you be talking this little cutie pie? isn't she adorable."  "I'm afraid not I want what you call the bad luck kid."  "Why?" he asked in surprise. "I don't understand that is the bad luck kid Doctor. You don't want the bad luck kid," he tried to persuade me. "Mr. Claws have I not made myself clear. I want to adopt that child and if you call that child the bad luck child one more time, I will personally see to it that this adoption agency is closed down. I see at least five health and safety issues besides your personal bias towards certain children. I will have you thrown into prison. Have I made myself clear? "I'm-.. Doc- I'm sorr- I'm sorry," he stuttered. "Doctor please I'm so sorry I really am. I'm going to change I promise."

"Don't make promises you can't keep."
