It was a cold autumn night. School was starting in a few days. I was on my way to his backyard when he texted me.
(Him): where r u???
(Me): I'm almost there.
(Him): hurry up
(Me): fine
I quickened my pace, then soon reached his house. I opened the gate and walked down the driveway. As I walked further in, I noticed an outline of a figure and stopped. I knew it was him. His hood was up, and his hands rested in his hoodie pockets. It seemed like he was looking down. I froze. "Jeff?" I spoke shakily. He looked up and pushed himself off of the tree. "Finally," he said quietly, "where have you been?" I sighed, "Well, you texted me in the middle of dinner so..." He laughed. "Yeah, well, I guess that explains it." I leaned against the house. "Why so late? Shouldn't we be inside?" I walked towards the back door but stopped, and noticed the doorknob was smeared with blood. Jeff grabbed my shoulder and held me back. "I wouldn't go in there if I were you," he said softly, "you know what they say, 'what you've seen, cannot be unseen'." I turned around and noticed he was still looking down. I looked lower and saw his white sweatshirt and his pants were splattered with blood. I backed up against the house as he stepped closer. "Jeff, what did you do?" I said, on the verge of freaking out. He scoffed, "They thought I was crazy. Do they not respect individual style?" He laughed and motioned to the door. "Go ahead. Go inside if you want to." As I looked towards the door, I got a flashback of how I won his heart : my nonchalance. I looked back at him. "They're dead," was all I said. He sighed, "Yeah they are. But they aren't the only ones." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a photo and handed it to me. I took it from his hand and focused my eyes the best I could in the darkness. I noticed it was a family photo : him, his older brother Liu, his mom, and his dad. But everyone's face had an "X" over it. He spoke darkly, "Jeffrey Woods is gone." I looked at him, confused. "What do you mean?" He sighed and pulled his hood back. All I did was stare. His eyelids were burned off completely, and his smile...I Dont even think I should call it a smile. His mouth was completely slashed from ear to ear. Like, it was ripped open. Like his mouth was in a permanent smile. I stepped up close to him and touched his cheek. Not knowing what to do, I hugged him. To be completely honest, I was surprised when he hugged me back. We stayed like that for a while, then he broke the silence. "We need to leave." I pulled away and looked up into his eyes. "What do you mean 'leave' ?" He began to walk around; he always does this when he's nervous. "Well we can't just stay here!! Sooner or later someone's gonna come along and go inside and say, 'Oh, where's Jeff? How come his family is rotting here and he isn't'? " He ran his fingers through his jet black hair. "You love me Dont you?" I hate it when he gets this emotional. "Of course I do." He grabbed my shoulders. "Then you'll run away with me." I had nothing to say. I was utterly terrified of what he would do if I didn't go. It was a big possibility that my life was in my own hands. I sighed and rested my hands on his. "Okay. I'll go with you." I felt his grip ease up and he sighed. "Hold on a sec." He left me standing in the backyard as he disappeared in to the house. I began to do a fun through of everything that had just happened. The came out about 10 minuted later with a duffel bag and keys. We got into his parents car and he handed me the bag. "There's enough food, clothes and supplies in there to last us a while." I nodded as he started the car and pulled out of the driveway. I didn't know where we were going, and I'm pretty sure he didn't either.
