It all enclosed around me. The walls, the shadows, the fear. There has never been a time in my life when I have felt this. This emotion causing me to panic, my heart rate to sky rocket, my hands to shake. I have felt fear before, many times. But this, this is not just being scared. This feeling I felt was one of pure terror.

All I could do to comfort myself was to watch the swaying shadows as I hugged her closer to me. But even that didn't bring me any peace, at this point nothing could.

The foot steps were getting louder and the light was getting brighter. My anxiety was peaking and there was nothing I could do. I tried focusing on the feeling of the dumpster behind my back digging into my skin. I tried focusing on the rank smell that was coming off the garbage. I attempted to focus on the brick walls that cornered us into this tight space. The random boxes in the corner, the cold pavement, the body laying against mine. But it all came back to one singular fact, we were trapped and there was no escape.

Our chasers are right outside the alley and there was no where to run. The road was closed and empty, no matter where we ran it would be a strait shot for them to get to us. Going into another alley would just further trap us. There was nothing around me I could use as a weapon, and I had no time to devoid my secrecy and dig through the trash.

" Hurry up. The entire mission our entire future depends on catching him". The goons voice echoed through the alley.

That is when it hit me. They never said them, they said him. They only know one of us is here. Maybe one of us could get away after all. I leaned down and whispered, " no matter what happens stay quiet and stay still," she nodded and I slowly shifted her wait off of me.

Buh bump. . . buh bump. . . buh bump.

Everything faded away. My focus on my surroundings disappeared into a blur in the back of my mind.

Buh bump. . .

The racing footsteps coming closer and closer shifted into a muted drum.

Buh bump. . .

The feeling of my hands pushed up against the dumpster numbed until I felt nothing at all.

Buh bump. . .

My breathing vanished into shaky inhales. Everything is faded.

Buh bump. . .

But a singular noise pounding in my ears and banging on my chest.

It was too late now to change anything that led to this moment. This moment that I knew would be over for me soon. This moment probably would be my last. It would all me worth it in the end. The pain, the suffering gone and my conscience clear. They were after me not her so maybe, just maybe she can live a normal life just a little longer.

Without any further thinking I grabbed the metal trash can they lay on its side against the boxes. I wasn't aware of any noises I made, and I didn't care, all I could hear was the buh bump. . . of my speeding heart. I turned around and braces for whatever was to come sprinting around the corner. The light changed course, and I found myself looking straight into a flashlight. A flashlight held by a man dressed in all black. Another man stood behind him this one younger, but dressed in the same attire. The one with the flashlight yelled something, but I didn't hear it through my deaf ears. I had two targets, so I had to make this one-shot count.

In a sudden spring of action I charged towards the entrance of the alley as I held the garbage can in front of me. Once I got close enough I pushed the trash can forward and into the two men. I kept on running, past them, and down the street. I tried to forge ahead but I could help but look back and see how well the can did at slowing them down. As if things couldn't get any worse the attempt to slow them down didn't last as long as I had planned for. The younger man was already up and sprinting towards me gun in hand. The other goon was in the process of standing up anxious to join the other in the chase.

I had no where to go. No where to hide. All that was on the deserted street was rows of tall buildings and us. I tried weaving and running in random directions, but after seeing the gun I knew that there truly would be no escape. It was only a few seconds later when I heard a loud bang, and found my self staring up at the sky.

The dark sky. The black sky speckled by the tiny stars. The sky that shown it's light onto me from the moon. A searing pain pulsed up my thigh. A pain that over took the sound of my drumming heart as it slowed to an easier pace. A pain that numbed me. A pain that coupled with exhaustion caused the stars to go out. A pain that caused the silhouettes of the two men standing above me to fade, into the rest of the inky blackness. I knew this was going to be the end. Even from the beginning I knew I wouldn't last long. I'm not as tough as people think and I'm not as brave as people believe. Like the lamp posts from the past it was night and it was time for me to be put out.

All there was to do now was to pray that they wouldn't go back into that alley.
