"You feeling better?" your roommate asked, kicking open the front door with the back of her heel and throwing a few books on the side table by the door. Cold air from the hallway rushed into the room, and you cringed.

"Yeah," you halfheartedly replied, playing with the ends of your hair. You were lying spread-eagle on the rug in the middle of your shared dorm, a bag of chips somewhere off to your right side.

"You're not ok," she sighed, picking up the bag of chips and placing it on the counter. She sat next to you on the rug. "Sit up. Talk to me."

You groaned. "No."

"Please?"

"Fine." You sat up. Ringlets of morning breath were tangled in your knotted hair, charcoal circles under your tired eyes.

"Smile."

"No."

"Ok, whatever. Look, you need to get over him."

"I have gotten over him."

"Look at yourself! No, you haven't." You ran a hand through your hair and sighed.

"Ok, you're right, I haven't. You win," you groaned.

"It's not about that, come on. You need to get out of the dorm and go to classes."

"He's in some of them."

"At least go somewhere," she said. "Meet new people. He obviously didn't deserve you, and you need to learn to move on." Feeling familiar tears rising, you buried your head in your hands.

"I can't. I trusted him."

"You're sitting here, crying in your dorm, and he's probably out there screwing some other chick over. Do you want him to have the additional pleasure of beating you to the ground to an emotional pulp?"

"No."

"Get out. Do something. Staying inside will only make it worse."

"I will."

"And don't look like a wreck. Meet people."

"I will." She was making sense but also managing to annoy you to no end. You threw a pillow at her in frustration. "I'm going! I'll do something."

"Get dressed, and then I'll leave."

"Why do you have to care so much?" you groaned, stumbling up from your cocoon on the dorm floor.

"I'm your friend, and I'm worried about you. Now change. I'm waiting."

Through some heavy persuasion, your roommate had convinced you to wear the chicest outfit in your closet coupled with a dusting of light makeup. At the end of it all, you smelled like cheap perfume and hairspray while managing to look like you had actually been a sane, functioning person for the past week.

"See? Good to go. Now go do something. I'm going to be late," your roommate called, flinging open the door and leaving you standing in the front hallway. You had decided to bring some of your textbooks along and read up on the lessons you had missed. If you had decided to go to class, you might as well have been prepared.

"Somewhere to study..." you mused. There was a coffee shop on campus that you usually had studied at, but you were afraid of running into your ex there. But there was a different coffee shop a few blocks away, one that you had heard of but never actually gone to. Perhaps you could study there.

You pushed open the frosted glass doors of the shop and were immediately greeted by the cheery tinkle of a bell. The sharp aroma of freshly brewed coffee lingered in the back of your throat as you quietly stood in line. "Caramel macchiato," you repeated over and over in your head. For some reason, you were dreading placing your order at the front, but your urge for coffee had pushed you to stand in line.
