The air was chilly, the wind blew like hundreds of Arctic Wolves howling. The icy cold water splashed, the leafless trees swayed and cracked. IceWings flew across the endless snow and ice. It was dead silent though. It was night and everyone was going back to their homes.
In the beautiful Ice Palace, sat, Queen Glacier of the IceWings and Snowflake 0f the IceWings too. A stranded dragonet that Queen Glacier had taken under her wing.
Snowflake had been patiently waiting for Queen Glacier to read her daily bedtime story. Snowflake had always loved the stories, they were always different, sometimes true and even written by Queen Glacier or Queen Coral.
"Hello. My dear, thank you for patiently waiting. I was caught up with work. One of my guards had been mugged," Queen Glacier rolled her eyes.
Snowflake grinned from ear to ear at the huge, beautiful, white dragon in front of her. Snowflake was overly excited for this story time, thinking of what story she would tell today.
Queen Glacier sighed, "Dear, dear. Once there was a handsome dragon and a beautiful dragon. But their love was forbidden."
Then Snowflake asked, looking puzzled, "Why was their love forbidden? Was it the war or the tribes?"
Snowflake always asks questions when Queen Glacier tells her amazing stories. She was always curious and wanted to know more! Queen Glacier was hesitant to answer her. She carried on reading the story as if she hadn't heard that. Snowflake felt offended. Had she just been ignored?
"So, They met up in secret. If they were found, they would be killed instantly," Queen Glacier continued, looking a bit guilty for saying that part to a small 1 year old dragonet.
"Soon, they wanted to start a family. even with the risk of getting caught. So, they had one beautiful dragonet," Queen Glacier looked at her feet.
But... why?
"But when they had the dragonet, they realised it was a mistake, a bad one. The dragonet's mother had been killed by its grandfather, trying to target the dragonet itself. Then the father left. It could not bear the burden and responsibility. The small dragonet got a birthmark on her head, a snowflake," Queen Glacier smiled at Snowflake.
"Wait... like mine?" Snowflake asked without hesitation.
She was eager to find out. Queen Glacier nodded, looking plain and normal, without reaction. Was she not excited? This story seemed familiar but Snowflake was too young to understand just yet. Sooner or later she would. Queen Glacier stroked her forehead, where her birthmark laid.
"Well, I think it's time for you to go to bed? Sweet dreams!" Queen Glacier called out to her, as she strode out of the room, her white tail slithering across the floor.
Snowflake could not stop thinking about the story. Was it her? Or someone else? The next morning, Queen Glacier woke up with a start and ran to Snowflakes' room, her talons clicking against the ice that ran through the palace floors. Her Second-in-command told her that someone stole Snowflake but seeing is believing. So, she took off.
When she walked in, her heart dropped like an anchor sinking to the bottom of the icy sea, cracking all the ice in its way. She dropped to the floor and started sobbing quietly. She treated Snowflake like her own daughter, her own royal heir (even though she did have three other daughters). She could not believe it. She knew she had been taken by the Talons of Peace. This was HER fault. She had gotten a warning but did not believe it. She had failed to be Snowflakes' only mother figure.
But first things first, she wiped her tears away from her cheek and stood up like the queen she was.
Queen Glacier bellowed, "GUARDS! COME TO MY THRONE ROOM NOW! I NEED TO HOLD A EMERGENCY MEETING''
They all scrambled there, whispering to each other and panicking.
"WHO HAD BEEN ON GUARD DUTY FOR SNOWFLAKE? YOU?" Queen Glacier saw someone's hand raised.
"YOUR EXECUTION IS TOMORROW BE THERE AT DAWN," She continued screaming at them.
Queen Glacier realised that was a bit harsh but it had to be done. The guard had failed, she had too. She should have guarded her own daughter but no she was so caught up with her dumb queen duties all night. The guard who had been guarding Snowflake was a new one who volunteered to help. She was young and scared. But, Queen Glacier could not give into pity. She had to be a strong, commanding queen. If not, where would her tribe be? Cowering behind the safeness of the Ice Kingdom? Never!
Queen Glacier could never ever forgive herself for what happened, whether or not it was her fault. She felt like a failure.
Now, she had no idea where Snowflake was, how she was, what she was doing and most of all if she even was alive. Most probably, yes, they needed her for some dumb prophecy the annoying NightWings had created. The IceWings and NightWings had always been mortal enemies, ever since they stole Prince Arctic, their last IceWing animus. But maybe not...
