Chapter 5.

*****

I could hardly hear a thing over the blare of The EUFA Champions League theme song that filled the air. That was an indication that the match had begun. It didn't help that the men were screaming as well, creating a chaotic atmosphere in our house. All of that didn't matter much to me, I had other things to worry about.

While the identity of the person by the poolside remained unknown, I just stood there and watched Farida hurrying away with quick strides. I examined him from behind and noticed that he seemed quite engrossed with whatever he was doing there. The hoodie he had on prevented me from taking in his view, coupled with the fact that I couldn't see distant objects due to my myopic sight. It was necessary that I moved closer to satisfy my curiosity.

My heartbeat quickened for an unnatural reason as I approached him, hoping to find that he wasn't who I suspected him to be. I had heard so much about this Zaid of a person from my cousin that I was slowly beginning to suspect that he was the same man I met at the Sheikh Gobir Road. It was insane that my thoughts were leading in that direction. Weighing the possibility without actual proof, hit differently,I just can't deny it.

I mentally practiced how to start a conversation with him once I got there, hundreds of ideas flashed in my mind but I only settled on one, where I was simply going to say 'Hi' to him and I would just steal a glance at him the moment he craned his head up.

There I stood, a few inches away from him, purposely covering my face with my headscarf for obvious reasons: Should he turn out to be the Zaid that kept appearing in my imagination I should be able to bare the shock, knowing that he didn't recognize me and I wouldn't want Farida to find out that he was the same person I spoke to her about, part of me wished that I hadn't told her about it.

I brought the shailah up to my face, partially covering my nose and my lower jaw, leaving my eyes unclad because I didn't want him wondering why my entire face was covered with a black veil on a cold dark night.

I had everything all planned out, ready to make a move when suddenly I heard Farida's tiny voice from behind me. "Here you go. Your water." She said, offering him bottled water. I saw him turn away from his glowing screen.

I hitched at my scarf and then tightened my grip around it when he stretched out his hand, reaching for the bottle. I squinted at him but still couldn't see his face due to the dark shadow of our house that was cast over the pool.

"And I brought you a blanket. I thought you might catch a cold out here." I heard her saying in an amazing tone that even I had never heard before. "The weather is not friendly tonight." She finished saying with a shy smile gracing her lips. I was a little taken aback as to why she had to lend him my blanket without my permission. What was she thinking? Did she not know that I don't share my personal belongings with anyone, not even my siblings?
