In the year 845, humanity has been driven to the brink of extinction by the Titans, a species of giant, humanoid monsters that feed on humans. The only remaining population of humans lies behind a series of Walls, ruled by a Royal Government. That's why a military division for exploring outside the Walls, known as the Survey Corps, is devoting the people's hearts to getting as much information as it can.
A boy named Eren Yaegar opens his eyes from a nightmare, he sees two girls by his side: Mikasa Ackerman, and Aya Neumann. Aya is the one waking Eren up as she says, "Wake up, Eren. It'll get dark if we don't go home now."
"Aya...Mikasa..." Eren mutters.
Both girls are carrying the wood behind him and Mikasa asks, "Were you really so sound asleep that you were still dreaming when you woke up?"
Eren sighs, "No, but I feel like I just had the longest dream..."
"What did you dream of?" Aya asks with curiosity, but noticing the tears in his eyes, she frowns, "Why? Why are you crying?"
"Really? I'm crying?" Eren wipes his tears, not sure why he is crying and what he's dreaming of.
Once they get back to the city, Eren sulks and says, "Please, Aya, Mikasa, don't tell anyone that I was crying."
"We won't." Mikasa says. "But crying for no reason, you should have your dad give you a checkup."
"Don't be stupid! Like I can tell my old man about THIS?!" Eren yells.
"But we're worried about you." Aya says.
"What are you crying about, Eren?" A tall Garrison soldier walks up to them. Eren gasps, "M-Mr. Hannes!"
"Did Mikasa get mad at you for something?" Hannes asks.
"Huh?! What makes you think I'm crying? You reek of liquor!" Eren yells.
Aya notices that Hannes and his fellow soldiers have been drinking instead of watching the Walls for Titans, she asks, "Drinking again? What about your work?"
"Oh! We're on gate duty today." Hannes says. "We get hungry and thirsty, hanging out here all day. What's the big deal if liquor happens to be among the rations sometimes?"
Eren asks, "But in an emergency, would you be able to fight drunk?"
"What kind of emergency?" Hannes looks honestly confused, and it causes Eren and Aya to be angry.
"I don't believe this! It's obvious! I'm talking about if they broke down the wall and invade the town!" Eren yells.
Hannes holds his head and says, "Hey, Eren! Don't suddenly raise your voice like that..."
"Hahaha...the doctor's son has spirit!" "If the bastards break through the wall, we'll be on top of the situation. But I tell ya, that hasn't happened in a hundred years!"
"B-but it's dangerous to feel at ease like this! Mr. Yaegar says so!" Aya says.
"Well, you may be right. I'm not gonna second-guess Dr. Yaegar, this town's benefactor. But y'know...when you become a soldier, you get your chance to see 'em, hanging around outside the wall while you're on wall defense duty or whatever...and I just can't picture 'em even putting a dent in this 50-meter fortress."
"Then you're not even prepared to fight 'em in the first place, are you?!" Aya continues to ask.
"If that's the case, stop calling yourselves a "Garrison" and make it the "Wall Construction Corps" instead!" Eren says.
"That ain't a better idea either. But Eren, Aya. You have soldiers on active duty when the situation has gone to hell. On the other hand, when the guys and I are mocked as good-for-nothing sponges, that tells you we're all livin' in a time of peace, am I right?"
