CHAPTER 1

NIALL’S POV

Life ain’t fair. Ain’t easy. The ones we loved are ripped out of our grip everyday. Taken away against our will. Leaving us to cry over them and make our own pity parties. Yes, that was what I was doing in the moment. Sitting on the edge of the bed Christi and I used to share, flipping through some old pictures of us.

The tears flowed down my cheeks. Why her? Why the one thing I cared about the most, apart from my children? Why couldn’t it be me in her position right now? So many why’s, so many what if’s...

I didn’t know who to blame anymore. Was it the poor girl’s fault? No, definitely not. She was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Just like my princess. Or was it the drunken driver? How can people be so stupid?! Driving a van in the middle of town when he’s hammered....No, just no!

I started to cry harder. I didn’t even notice my grip on the picture I was holding was getting harder and harder. I stood up and threw my fist at the wall.

“Arrrghh!” I yelled in frustration, sliding down against the wall, which had a slight hole in it from my punch. Suddenly, I heard a faint ‘Daddy?’ coming from the doorway. I looked up to see my little princess there, leaning against the door frame, looking at me with wide innocent green eyes. Her and Blake’s eyes reminded me so much of Christi, sometimes it was even painful. I wiped my tears immediately- I couldn’t let my own children see my cry. I smiled and stood up, taking her up in my arms.

“What is it babygirl?” I kissed her forehead gently, stroking her chestnut hair.

“Daddy, is mwommy an angew?” Brianna asked, looking at me with teary eyes. I shook my head.

“No baby, not yet.” I smiled weakly.

“Is she gunna wake up then?” My eyes watered again.

“I don’t know Bri, I don’t know.” I whispered. You see, after that car crash, the doctors managed to keep Christi alive, but she fell in a coma...for five months so far. The worst thing was, the doctors said if she didn’t wake up in six months, she never would. And now, we had three weeks left with my beautiful Christi. Blake, Brianna and I spend as much time as we could in the hospital next to her, singing to her, reading her her favourite books and magazines, talking about our day. Sometimes it was a relief you know, to have someone listen to everything you had to say. Well, I wasn’t sure if she could actually listen but I still spoke.

Suddenly, my babyboy burst through the door and ran to the bed where Bri and I were, jumping on my lap.

“Daddy! Me wanna see mwommyy!” He whined. I chuckled and nodded.
