I could recognize that face anywhere, even from the stage, with the spotlight directly on me, in a sparkling dress and nude heels, in front of the curtain. I delivered my lines effortlessly, as my director had instructed me, but I could feel a small ache behind my eyes as I looked out over the audience and spotted him, sitting second to front row. The spotlight went off and I shuffled as quietly as I could in my heels off stage before the curtain raised to the main scene. Once off, I could let my character go and felt my real self come back, and I came back in a panic.
It's not as if he wouldn't have shown up; our drama program always puts on a performance for the school before we go public, and we hope for almost every student to attend; the more seats get filled, the more money we can add to our inadequate budget for the spring show.
Sports have always been bigger than the performing arts, but our school really shows it. While the football players were having new turf laid down on the field, our actors were dodging falling bits of the ceiling.
But we always put on one hell of a show.
