Dorothy thought that the words on her wrist were strange, and she lived most of her life ashamed of having them. One's words dictated one's way of life.
You're not what I expected
Those five words had cursed her entire existence. Her soulmate would take one look at her and decide that she was a disappointment, that she wasn't worth it.
When she was young, other kids always made fun of her for not being wanted by her soulmate. Needless to say, she got insecure. She started wearing a cuff on her wrist that was made for people who had embarrassing or vulgar words on their arms. In her teen years, she would tell anyone that asked about it that she had a swear word on her wrist and that's why she wore it. She hadn't taken it off in front of anyone since she was eleven years old.
Dorothy had long ago accepted that her soulmate wouldn't love her the way she wanted. So she focused on her studies and on her work. When she graduated, she decided that she wanted to make a real change in the world. When she was accepted into SHIELD, it was the best day of her life.
She spent her days at SHIELD working harder than ever, quickly rising to the top and becoming one of the best agents in her field. She prided herself on her abilities and many, many successful missions. It was her life, and she was happy with it.
When Dorothy was called down to Director Fury's office, she for sure thought that her job at SHIELD was done for. She didn't know what she did, but she knew that whenever someone was called down, it wasn't good.
"Look who's in trouble now..." a voice trailed off.
Dorothy turned around to see Brock Rumlow coming out of a room next to the office. How he knew about her being called down, she didn't know.
"Fuck off, Rumlow."
She'd hated his guts ever since she was assigned on her first mission with him. He was a great soldier, but he didn't listen to his subordinates and that was what got his team into trouble. Plus, he never treated her as an equal and always made these crude comments toward her. She even believed that he didn't have a soulmate until she saw him in a short-sleeve and saw the words on his wrist. It made her incomparably mad for reasons she avoided confronting.
Despite her apparent dislike of his company, he started walking beside her. A self-satisfied smirk on his rugged face. "I always knew you'd get fired eventually. It was just a matter of time."
Dorothy usually never let Rumlow get to her because she knew that he was just trying to get under her skin. But that comment hurt. She worked hard to get where she was, and some people still tried tearing her down.
Rumlow walked almost all the way to the Director's office, he only stopped when they got within earshot, but he still called out to her saying, "I'll even help you pack your things!"
With her head held high, she made it the rest of the way to the door of the office. She let out a breath before knocking.
The door opened and there stood Director Fury himself, stepping aside to welcome her inside. She couldn't read his expression, so she couldn't tell if he was going to deliver good or bad news.
She walked into the office with her hands professionally behind her back, mentally steeling herself for what was about to happen.
Director Fury rounded his desk and put both his fists down on it. "Agent Panzera, I expect you know why you're here?"
Dorothy shook her head as she stood on the other side of the desk. "I can't say that I do, sir."
"You are aware of the Avengers Initiative, correct?"
"I am, sir."
"Well, there's no point in beating around the bush. We– I mean I, want you to join the initiative."
Her eyes widened. "Sir?"
"Agent, I've seen your progress reports. Your skill set is exactly what the team needs right now. So, do you accept?"
There was a long pause where Dorothy was just shocked. She came into this expecting the worst, and now she was being asked to join a team of superheroes? It couldn't be real.
"Yes! I accept, sir."
"Good. Your first mission is now, a quinjet is waiting for you in the hanger."
Learning to not be surprised by missions over the years, Dorothy nodded her head and exited the office. She didn't waste any time heading down to the hangar.
The quinjet ride was short, and Dorothy was feeling giddy the whole way. Was she really joining the Avengers? There was absolutely no freaking way.
When the quinjet was right over the battle area, Dorothy jumped out with a parachute. She scanned the forest area for a safe place to land and steered herself there.
As soon as her boots hit the ground, she was surrounded by Hydra agents. She slipped the parachute off her shoulders and took out her two handguns from her thigh-holsters.
She shot several agents before any of them could ready their weapons. She ducked and rolled to avoid the gunfire and quickly shot four more. Her movements were the kind of precision that could only come from years of intense practice and training.
When she was finished with the agents within her sights, she had her arms out, guns in hand as she turned around.
She froze when she noticed Captain America standing there in all his patriotic glory. Uniform, shield, and defensive stance as Dorothy lowered her arms to her sides.
"Hey!" she expressed simply, putting away her guns to show she wasn't a threat. This was the leader of the Avengers, and therefore now her direct superior.
The Captain looked at her with wide eyes. Then, a charming smile adorned his face as he said, "You're not what I expected."
Her own smile dropped. She knew right away what had just occurred, and by the nonchalant look on the Captain's face, he didn't.
No. Captain America could not be her soulmate.
All those years of teasing, worrying, and being ashamed of her words were for nothing? She was relieved that her soulmate didn't humiliate her like she expected and instead expressed surprise, but she also felt cheated.
And of course he was devastatingly handsome. With his sharp jawline, high cheekbones, blond hair, and bright blue eyes. He had a strong sense of virility about him. All those pictures she'd seen and how people spoke of him on the news did not do that man's beauty justice. He was the definition of perfect, how could they belong together? How could he be hers? It must've been a mistake. It had to be.
Dorothy's heart was pounding in her chest and everything in her was telling her to get up and run. To call the quinjet back and tell the Director that she rejected the position as an Avenger. And yet, this opportunity was too great to pass. They had a mission. So she got up, dusting herself off before holding out her hand for her unknowing soulmate to shake.
"I'm from SHIELD, Agent Dorothy Panzera."
"Ma'am." He nodded his head as he took her hand in his leather-gloved one. "Captain Steve Rogers. I heard that you'd be joining us."
This man is so fine.
She shook off her thoughts and said, "Alright, well, we have a mission to complete, Captain."
