                                                                                     "I promise"

It was what they all said. One by one,holding hands under the moon on the wooden floor. They all sat together,the five of them. Each promising to never leave each others side. They where all complete polar oppisites to each other. Red,brown,blonde,and black hair. Blue,green,and brown eyes. Shy,bold,brave,curious,and feirce. but despite this they where all best friends. Best. Friends. Forever.  

It was the middle of the night. They had all abandoned their beds,tiptoeing together to the living room of jesse's apartment.  The adults had long since gone to sleep exhuasted by the 5 girls. Evelyn had invited them all down to the floor when they went to get a "drink of water". Lotte's heart leaped in her chest excited for what was coming. She took a seat next to bella,and jesse sat beside her. 

"ok guy's lets take a vow" Evelyn whispered excitedly. "What type of vow?" jesse asked curiousty sparkling in her eyes. "A vow of friendship" Evelyn said her face covered in a smile. All the faces in the room lit up,everyone nodded their head's vigorously. "The vow means we will stick together,through thick and thin" says Evelyn. "And to never leave each others side" inturrupted jesse, "To be best friends" Evelyn murmered,"forever". "and ever" Lotte added. "and ever" Ella  muttered.  "so do you take the vow?"  Evelyn asked. "YES!" they all said. "Do you promise?" Evelyn asked again "I do". "I promise" said bella,then so did the rest. Turn by turn around the circle. 

That was many years ago. 

When they were young,and believed nothing could separate them. Nothing at all.

It was years later when lotte realised that they could not be friends forever. 

She was sitting on a bench at school eating a sandwich when she realised. It was a salami sandwich,it feel's really important to say that. It was a sunny day.

And she was eating a salami sandwich.

The sandwich was the main thing she remembered that day.

salami. Thinly sliced meat. which was red and spicy. 

She raised her sandwich and took a bite,looking up to see where her friends were. And that's when she noticed. They weren't together.  Bella and Ella were sitting together with her on that bench.  And Jesse and evelyn weren't. They were with other people. Jesse was skipping rope on the courts with a group of girls. Evelyn was with gregory chatting under the trees.  Lotte frowned into her sandwich. She shouldn't be getting to upset about it,they were merely hanging out with other people. That was fine. They didn't always had to spend lunch with her. 

But......

They hadn't spent lunch with her and that was something.

They also hadn't spent lunch together yesterday either.................

And that was something.

Lotte put down her salami sandwich. "what's wrong?" asked bella. Lotte shrugged.  

"do you think we can be friends forever?" Lotte needed to ask.  Bella stared at her,her brows scrunched together in thought. "well.." Bella said "probably not,but we can enjoy it while it last's". Lotte smiled at that "we certinaly can,we certainly can". Bella giggled and then said in a deep voice  "we certainly can".  Lotte tried to hold back giggles,but only ended up snorting loudly. "HOW DARE YOU LAUGH WITHOUT ME!!!" yelled Ella looking up from her comic. 

That only made them laugh harder.

"I'm sorry for disrespecting you by laughing without you." Lotte said in a ridicoulous voice,"I won't do it again" 

Ella burst out laughing.

The trio laughed for ages. Why they had no idea,it wasn't even a funny joke. Maybe that was why they where laughing,because it was such a bad joke. 

Or maybe it was becuase they were 5th graders.

I dunno.

Lotte loved to smile. And laugh,and make other people laugh.

So thats what she did.

And by doing that she felt happy,she found good friends. She only found good friends.

Or so she thought.
