— events take place before the Tokyo training camp arc in an AU timeline.

"Hinata! Oh no! Are you alright?" Sugawara rushed to Hinata, who was flat against the wall after taking a volleyball to the face. The rest of the team was laughing and let Suga tend to him. He was probably ok, but you know, club funding wasn't nearly enough to withstand a lawsuit.

Shoyo raised his face from the wood and groaned. "I'm fine! Don't worry about me, haha, it's not the first time and it won't be the last..." He brushed himself off and stood up. Practice had started about an hour and a half ago, but he was still feeling pumped. "So what's next! I wanna try a new serve I saw! I was watching the Olympics and there was some cool stuff this year."

Gesturing to the rest of the team, Suga replied, "Well, actually, I think there's an announcement soon." He glanced over at them and noticed they were taking a short water break, "Yeah, look, I think they're talking about it now. Come on, let's go see what's going on."

They jogged over to the little huddle, laughing lightly because of the great progress they had made that day. Daichi sat on the bleachers with Asahi and chatted with Nishinoya while Kageyama and Ennoshita passed water bottles around to the rest. Wanting to give the team some feedback before the announcement, Daichi stood up and whipped a towel over his shoulder.

"Good job so far, team. We worked really hard but there are still some things to clean up before we leave for the day. Unfortunately, since our finals/tests are coming up rather soon, I've been requested to keep our
practices shorter than usual until they're over." He sighed, pointing at the main door that led to the school and continued, "Hey, I know what you guys might be thinking. Who had the audacity to tell us to cut our practices short when we have lots to do? To tell you the truth, it was the front office lady. Still though, she's right."

Kageyama audiably groaned, though he quickly realized he had and tried to turn it into a yawn. He decided to save it by speaking up. "So when are we leaving then?"

Sugawara gave him a look since he hadn't really made a good choice with his tone.

Smiling and waving him off, Daichi began to explain the rest of the schedule. After everyone understood, he began to hype them up for the announcement they had all been waiting for. "So, as you all may already know, we have something exciting to share with you! But, as you may not know, it's not our news. Nishinoya, take it away."

Nishinoya hopped up and stood on the bleachers so he could see everyone a bit better and be in the center of attention. "I'm having a party! The whole team's invited, plus some others from school."

As soon as he had said these words, the team erupted into cheering and laughing again. Their middle of the year tests were coming up and it made everyone a bit more on edge. They all really needed something to look forward to.

"Yeah, yeah guys! Hey chill for a sec so I can tell you when it's actually going to be!" Noya put his hands on his hips and smirked. The team gradually became more quiet. "It's in two weeks. Just enough time for the squirts to convince their parents to drive them to my place." He beamed.

"Alright!!" Tanaka pumped a fist in the air as he celebrated. "No excuses little guy," He said, pointing at Hinata. "you've gotta come to one of Nishinoya's parties. They're freakin wild, man." Tanaka dropped his voice down a bit, bending over to whisper. "Probably cuz there isn't a lot of supervision with his parents never being home on the weekends. I'll be honest, I don't think I've ever even met them before."

For the remaining time they were on the court, the party was all they could talk about. Apparently Noya had quite a reputation for exciting parties and everyone was talking about it as they walked out the door to go home.

Daichi was the last one to leave, as he had the keys. Sugawara hung back with him as he locked up. "Should I be worried about Noya, Daichi?" He asked, thinking about the comment he'd overheard from Tanaka. He hadn't said anything before, but Suga had always noticed something off about Noya's home life. It certainly didn't help that he didn't talk about it.

Placing a hand on the handle, Daichi sighed. He turned around slowly and lowered his head in something of a silent prayer. "Suga, I have to be honest with you. I mean, it's kinda been our thing, honesty, but um, this wasn't something that was in my jurisdiction to talk about, so uh..."

"Hey, if it's not something I should know about then I don't want to know." They began to walk down the hill to Daichi's car. It was a cold, pretty day, with a slight breeze that ruffled Suga's hair softly.

"No, it'd be good to have another pair of eyes for this one." Daichi sighed again, looking tense. "I have been made aware that Nishinoya's home is... not... a great environment. For him. There isn't much that you or I can do about it, other than being open to anything he needs. He's only come to me twice with something he needed and honestly, I wish I was doing a better job..."

Suga leaned against Daichi's old white Toyota truck with his arms folded. He tossed his scarf over his shoulder and said, "It's an abusive home then? Hm... thought it might be."

They climbed in and pulled out of the street parking spaces. The radio had turned on automatically, quietly playing some random pop song from the U.S. It might've been that weird song "Everybody talks" by Neon Trees. Suga couldn't be sure. He pulled out one of his folders from his messenger bag on the floor and began to study. He always found that the motion from the car helped him think. Suga didn't get motion sick at all, he'd read too much in the car as a kid for that.

Daichi had begun to hum the song, but he stopped when he realized what Suga had said before they'd gotten in the truck. "Wait, what? You thought Noya might've been...?"

Suga looked up from the blue folder and waved, "Oh yeah, sure. I listen a lot more than people give me credit for. And watch. I do a lot of watching these days." He put a fist to his cheek and looked out the window.

Of course Daichi felt a bit bad for his boyfriend. It wasn't his fault that he didn't really get to play in the real games since they'd gotten Kageyama on their team. It was kind of complicated, but he had noticed that it made Suga a bit more down. Being benched was never fun, especially as a senior.

"What gave it away? I didn't know about it until I became captain and a counselor told me." Daichi turned onto the freeway and tapped the steering wheel nervously. He felt a bit stupid that someone, especially someone close to him, knew about something he was trying to keep under the radar.

Suga put a finger to his lips and thought. "I suppose it might have been the bruises first off. He always had a reason for them and so nobody thought about it. I just don't think that any of the other liberos that I've played against from any other top-notch or garbage heap school has ever looked that beat up from "practicing". I don't think I've ever heard a word about his parents and I've only seen their signature on club forms. He always talks about his grandpa though, have you noticed?"

"Yeah, now that you mention it, it makes sense." The truck stopped abruptly at a red stop light, causing Suga to slam a palm on the dash from the momentum. "Sorry!" Daichi muttered, afraid that he was about to get rebuked.

"It's ok... Yeah, anyway. That's what I noticed. Plus the party's absolute chaos last year. Speaking of which, we need to do something about the silly string, Daichi. We can not let Tanaka bring silly string again. It was funny, and granted, amazing, but I don't want to clean that up again..."

They're conversation began to take a lighter tone as they drove through the suburban streets to their homes. The sun had finally started to set and cast a beautiful, golden glow around everything. Daichi stopped the truck in front of Suga's house and unlocked the doors.

Hopping out and slamming it shut, Suga waved goodbye and started walking up his driveway. "Hey, wait a second Suga!" Daichi called from the driver's seat. He trotted back up to the truck, expecting some other news they'd forgotten about. Turns out Daichi hadn't wanted anything other than a goodbye kiss and a last reminder about next practice.

"Don't be late, ok?" He said, running a hand through Suga's soft hair.

"I won't!" And Suga was shutting the door and running back to his boring, average, suburban house, clutching his folder and grinning.
