Cover request, found in the wild, for a collection of poems about surviving sexual assault, the aftermath, recovery and hope.
It was important to show strength, hope but also wounds.
Two motifs crystalized immediately: water and kintsugi.
Water is a wonderful motif because it carries a lot of meanings that are very dependent on context. Apparently, I only know the version in which it's bringing melancholy but that's a me problem not a water problem.
And kintsugi is a Japanese technique / philosophy of mending broken pottery in a obvious way because cracks are not something to be hidden but part of its history. I recommend reading about it because it's interesting and pretty. And since it's poetry, and I know very little about poetry and even less about making covers for poetry, I went with the first aesthetic that I connect to the form. First idea was heavy manipulation but it felt way too much for the request and after a lot of scrapping and restarting, I came to this concept - realism but not fully.
I don't know if the author will even use this cover but either way, I'm proud of it and wanted to show off.
The less resources I use, the more time I spend making the cover.
