"Check their arms for bites!" One of the men said sternly.

Gabby was grabbed and had her sleeves pulled up, "Hey! Get off my sister!" I yelled, lunging for the man. However when I went to grab him I was thrown onto the floor.

"Shut up bitch!" The man yelled. Anger was bubbling inside of me from his comment, but I didn't want to get myself killed.

I lay on the floor for a moment before they came to me, searching my arms for any form of cut, scratch, or bite. They finished off searching all of us before it went silent.

"Shh. Do you hear that?" The woman whispered.

The room went silent and senses increased. I heard growling and what can only be described as a stampede, vibrating the floors. Oh shit.

"Close the door and stay silent. Hopefully they'll just pass." The man said sternly. With that said, gabby ran into the other room, stepping on creaky floorboards on her way.

I went to go and run after her, but the woman we met before held Her onto me tight, "She'll be okay, we just need to be as quiet as possible." She whispered, her eyes sparkled with empathy and she flashed me a quick smile.

The noises intensified as they came closer. I felt fear like I'd never felt before. It sounded as if they had stopped outside the apartment. My thoughts had come true as there was a loud bang at the door coupled with a groan.

Fuck!

Two of the men were stood by the door with guns, looking through the peephole.

"What are we going to do?" I whispered to the woman.

"They'll pass, it happened a few hours ago when it all first happened. Your little sister will be fine, just stay here. Don't move, okay?"

I couldn't leave gabby in another room by herself. I bet she's terrified. I mean what if they get in and go for her first?

I took my chances and bolted up, running into the room gabby was in, mistakenly stepping on the same creaky floorboards gabby did.

"Gabriella?" I spoke. Little did I know that was my biggest mistake.

Running was the only sound I heard as I stood still in shock. I spoke too loud.

The banging on the door continued and got louder and harder.

"A, I'm scared." Gabby whispered, appearing from the dark and grabbing my hand. A feeling of gratitude rushed through me, I'm so glad she's not been injured.

"I know, me too. We have to stay silent okay. Let's go to the others in the lounge. Tippy toes, got it?" She nodded.

I lead us into the lounge being careful to avoid the creaky floorboards.

We got into the lounge and hid behind the table next to the couple, already knowing what's coming for us. I pray silently for a quick ending, though I know that is rare if I get bitten.

But surprisingly after a few minutes silence the banging stopped and whatever was out there, walked off into a different direction.

"Pack your bags. We are leaving. There's a helicopter on its way, we have a base up north. We'll gather other survivors later. It's too dangerous right now." One of the men spoke silently.

"How do we know it's safe? You have seen how quickly this virus has spread. How do you know if the base you are talking about hasn't already been overrun by them?" I asked, practically whispering.

He took a moment to think, "It's our only bet."

The couple had immediately started collecting food and tins out of the cupboard, along with a few water bottles out of the cupboard.
