The night is unusually chaotic- it being summer and all. Storms here only occur between the months of April and May, none before, none after. But as the the rain shoots down like glass bullets, the lighting strikes, and the loud thunder rumbles, cracks, and echoes throughout the sky. I, along with the rest of the town, know that something isn't right. I can feel the gloominess that comes with this kind of weather, is it the weather? Is it gloominess? Or do I just have these uncomfortable butterflies attacking my stomach, just an overall feeling of uneasiness, as if something is wrong.
Nonetheless I figure sitting on my bed watching the storm won't make it go away. It's only around 10:00, I could fix a cup of tea and catch up on season 6 of Supernatural on Netflix.
I close my curtains, then stand up and walk to the kitchen. After preparing the tea, I set it on the end table next to the couch, and I start my next episode.
Ten minutes into it, and the storm has only gotten louder. The sound of thunder is almost constant, it drowns out Castiel, the love of my life. With a sigh, I pause the show and shut my tv off.
I'm not usually scared of thunderstorms, in fact I find them quite interesting, but right now I feel like hiding under my blanket and crying. As another lightning strikes, my whole apartment goes black. I can hear the eccentric thump of my heart with this sudden change, and I feel panic shoot through my body. I, a 22 year old woman, am very afraid of the dark. Of course Im not prepared for a situation like this, not having a flashlight nor candle in my possession, just the thought of sitting out this terrifying storm in the dark is enough to bring tears to my eyes. I am such a baby.
I could always ask one of my neighbors if they have a flashlight to spare for me. The only ones- that I know of - are crazy Karen, that meth head Tom, and some lady who loves to bake me pies, all of who I wish not to associate with at this time of night. You'd think this damned complex would at least have a generator for moments like these, but no, of course not.
I slowly sip my tea, trying to calm myself down along with trying not to dump it all over me. I'm beginning to get used to the silence and darkness, the less I think about it the better.
Soon enough I finished my tea and decided I should sleep, I was already having trouble staying awake. The couch was too comfortable to move from, so I grabbed the nearest blanket and snuggled up to it, surprisingly finding myself able to fall asleep to the Armageddon happening outside.
I wake up what feels like only a few minutes later, but must've been longer, because my whole room is lit up from the light outside, even through the blinds that were drawn. I grab my cell phone to check the time, but all I get is black screen, stupid apple and their stupid short lasting batteries. Next I try the tv, but no luck, the power is still out?
With a sigh, I stand up and stretch, I'm just as tired as I was when I went to sleep. I walk over to the giant window that over looks part of the city, pulling up the blinds. I almost fall flat on my butt when I see the sky.
The light I mistook for the sun, was actually a giant, blinding lighting shooting out of the sky, like a beam. It was so bright I had to squint to see it, it was almost white in color. I would have thought this was a rapture of some sort, if there weren't bodies floating to the sky. Instead it was focused to what looked like only a few miles away from me, in the middle of the city's downtown forest. The storm was still going on.
Out of nowhere the light turned a bright blue, and I could barely make out a dark object being shot down from the sky, as fast as the rain was. I lost sight of it as soon as it landed in the forest, only seconds later the loudest sound I've heard echoed through my apartment, and I'm sure the whole city. It shook the walls and everything around me, making me lose my balance and fall. It sounded almost as an explosion.
Then, just as fast as it happened, the light disappeared, and the storm stopped. Everything was silent, peaceful even. The electricity came back on, the room lighting up again, and the news station reporting the damage of the storm. That's what surprised me, there was no 'breaking news' about a strange beam from the sky, only about flooding and that sort. Did nobody else see that?
It was around 5:30, the sun would be rising soon, and I was too awake to sleep again. So I threw on a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt, slipped on my boots, and headed toward the elevator. I'm going to check this out.
I hurry past the rooms of my weird and slightly terrifying neighbors, hoping none of them will come out and try to socialize with me. I'm probably considered the shut in of our floor. I do my best to leave only when I know that I won't meet any unwanted company, not that it always works. Countless times I have had awkward elevator rides with crazy Karen. I dont consider myself a judgmental person, but that lady has some intense psychological issues.
After a lonely elevator ride to the lobby, I step out, immediately greeted by Ray, our doorman.
"Woah look who came out of her den before noon for once."
"Oh you're hilarious Ray, really." I glare at him.
"I try, where are you heading this early in the a.m. though, really?" He asks leaning his arms on the desk in front of him.
"Oh y'know checking things out from the storm last night, damages and all."
"Oh yeah, last night was rough, worst one in about 100 years apparently."
"Ray," I begin, leaning closer to him, "did you like see something weird last night?"
"What kind of weird?"
"Like, a giant beam of light coming out of the sky and then hear an explosion?" I whisper.
"All I saw was lighting and heard thunder. You sure you didn't accidentally inhale some dope coming from that druggies room, what's his name? Tom?"
"No, I- maybe it was a dream. Forget I said anything about it." But I know it wasn't a dream, it was too real.
"Okay, then, have fun with your mysterious shenanigans."
I waved him goodbye as I walked through the doors into the enormous parking garage, of course since I was on the highest floor, my designated spot was almost the farthest away from the doors. That's why I do my best to avoid getting here at night.
I run to my car, both nervous and excited as to what's to come.
The drive to the forest is long, traffic is crazy, everyone getting to work and checking out the damage around the city. I realize that I am not at all prepared for a hike to who knows how far into the forest and who knows where. Of course I only have this sudden occurrence as soon as I pull into the desolated parking area.
After a moment of pep talking myself, I decide that I can do it. The day is warm with a nice cool breeze, so I hopefully won't get heat stroke.
I just pray that my new boots won't get too muddy.
