Chapter 1: Coincidence
The members of the Qingmiao Brigade had gone into a state of hibernation because of the bitterly frigid winter. Few people ventured outside in the snow and ice. Everyone stayed in their respective yards.
The chill that emerged from the wall crevices pierced Xu Nuo's bones as she curled up on the bed and hid under the quilt.
It's cold, it's too cold.
Even the burning kang under her can't bring much warmth.
A young girl's heartbreaking wail could be heard in her ear along with some remarks like "You're partial and eccentric" and the sound of a stick hitting someone. Zhaodi pushed her into the river today, so she was aware that Zhaodi had been beaten by her grandfather. She would currently be buried under and not be resting on the bed shaking if it weren't for someone walking by the river.
Soon, Song Yuhe, her grandmother, entered carrying a bowl of bitter-smelling, boiling medicine. Song Yuhe suppressed her disgust for Xu Zhaodi when she saw Xu Nuo and replaced it with a caring expression.
"Nuonuo, how are you doing? Is it cold? Get up, take the medication, and then get some rest. Tomorrow morning, you won't feel any discomfort."
Song Yuhe supported Xu Nuo up, "Grandma, don't drink." She whispered in a hoarse voice as she frowned at the foul bowl of medicine in front of her.
She is so small she can't even speak clearly yet.
Song Yuhe was saddened when she saw her granddaughter's sickly appearance. In her heart, she reprimanded Xu Zhaodi once again. Xu Zhaodi can even push her two-year-old granddaughter into the water like this. Despite how chilly it is right now, the river hasn't frozen over. Her granddaughter was pushed down in her large cotton-padded jacket and was dragged deeper into the water by the weight of it. Xu Nuo was unconscious when she was saved.
Holding the bowl, Xu Nuo ruthlessly gulped the medicine and swiftly rinsed her mouth with the water Song Yuhe had given.
Song Yuhe tucked the quilt for her as she lay down, saying, "You can sleep at ease. You don't have to worry about anything else."
The quilt revealed Xu Nuo's little head. Even though she was still shivering from the cold, she dozed off as soon as the medication kicked in.
Song Yuhe took the empty bowl after seeing she was fast sleeping and pushed open the door. She noticed Xu Cheng staring inside the door as he peered through the crack.
When Xu Cheng saw his grandma appear, he immediately stood up straight and asked, "Grandma, how is sister?"
Song Yuhe headed to the kitchen while carrying Xu Cheng. She calmly explained to him, rather than fooling him because he was young, "Your sister just dozed off after taking medication. Please, Xiaocheng, don't enter and disturb her, okay?"
Song Yuhe's neck was hugged by Xu Cheng, who sadly nodded. He gave Xu Zhaodi a ferocious look as he passed by, "Bad! Pushed my sister!"
Grandpa Xu hit Xu Zhaodi a little harder after he heard this. The parents and sisters of Xu Zhaodi stood next to him and dared not intervene for fear that he might come and beat them as well. The actions of the family of the eldest son did not at all surprise Song Yuhe. She carried Xu Cheng into the kitchen while appearing as if she had not noticed the scene.
Speaking of which, Song Yuhe's eldest son is not her biological child. The first wife of Grandpa Xu passed away while giving birth and left her eldest son, Xu Jianguo, behind.
