You awoke the next morning to sunlight filtering into the cave. "That's strange, Cairnholm is usually so cloudy." You cracked your stiff neck as you stood and made your way out of the cave.As you walked into the bright light of the morning, you smiled. You couldn't remember the last time you'd actually been outside. You looked around to make sure there was no one around, and laid in the grass, watching the clouds. Feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin was amazing and you laid there for what felt like hours.
Eventually, you got up, looking down at the ugly gown that you still wore from the institution. Looking behind you, the little town of Cairnholm was just barely visible, and without much thought, you walked towards the other side of the island.
While you walked along the small, worn dirt road, you looked out across the water, wondering if you could somehow sneak aboard a ferry and sail away to god knows where.
Before long, you thought you heard something in the distance. It sounded like children laughing. You slightly picked up the pace and followed the pleasant noise. You broke through the tree line and saw a house. It was one of the most beautiful buildings you had ever seen, considering you had spent the last 12 years behind the same walls.
You could hear laughter behind the house, and you just decided to knock on the door. You hoped that whoever lived here would provide you a place to stay, even if it was just for one night. You struck your knuckles against the door and waited. Not a few seconds later, a woman opened the door.
There was something about here that amazed you. Her hair was like the night sky, Black with an almost metallic tint of blue. She wore a navy blue dress, and a pipe hung from her mouth. "Hello there. And who might you be?" She cocked her head to the side, reminding you of a bird observing its surroundings.
"Um, my name is y/n. I'm lost and I just stumbled upon your house and was hoping that you'd maybe be kind enough to give me a place to stay, even for just a night." She gave you a curious look. "Well, my name is Miss Peregrine. I haven't seen you around town." she paused. "Tell me, what year do you think it is, by chance?" You were a bit taken aback by her question, but gave an answer. "Well, it's 2016, of course." She smiled. "I see, you're not from here, are you." It wasn't really a question. Even if it was, you wouldn't have been able to answer. "Darling, I apologize if this sounds strange, but do you, by chance, have any special abilities? Something that, say, your parents don't have?"
You could only muster a small nod. To be frank, you were completely baffled. How could she know that? She seemed to sense how overwhelmed you were, and took both of your hands into hers. "Why don't you come in dear, this must be a lot for you."
*******
The two of you sat in the living room, and you tapped your foot nervously. "So, you say that you have an ability, yes?" You nodded again, and she smiled. "Well, that is what we call a peculiarity. I have one myself. And so do all of the children that I look after." You looked around at some of the pictures on the walls, there were 12 different children.
"Could you maybe show me what you can do dear?" She looked at you expectantly. "Well, it works better at night, but I can try. I, um, hope you don't have a weak stomach." She chuckled a bit as you closed your eyes and tried to focus. Eventually, you felt the change start, so you opened your eyes to see your hands had gone gray and decayed-looking. You glanced at a mirror hanging on the wall and saw your face was the same grayish color. Your eyes were sunken and dark, and your cheek broke apart to reveal your teeth.
You looked back at her, her eyes were slightly wide, but she didn't react like everyone else who had seen it. Eventually, she just smiled again. "Well this is what I can do. And there's another part that comes with it. If I bite someone, they...they die. And I can't really look like this all day, just all night if I want to. I can only hold it for a few minutes at a time during the day." You could already feel your cheek repairing itself and your skin returning to its normal smoothness.
"Darling, that is an incredible peculiarity." You smiled at her. No one had ever said anything like that to you before. It touched you to your core. "Y/n, would you like to stay here with us?" You felt your eyes fill with tears, and you nodded quickly. "Yes, I'd absolutely love that. Thank you, you've been kinder to me than anyone else has ever treated me." She embraced you in a tight hug and then smoothed down your hair.
"Why don't we go and find you some clothes?" She led you upstairs. As you walked down the hallway, you noticed one of the doors was cracked open, and you could hear faint classical music coming from it. Miss Peregrine led you to a small, cozy bedroom, and you sat on the bed as she opened the closet, pulling out a simple green dress and a pair of brown boots. "After you finish dressing, you can come back down to the living room and meet everyone."
*******
As you walked down the stairs, you let it sink in that you'd finally found somewhere that you seemed to belong. No doctors poking you and injecting you with random drugs. You found Miss Peregrine in the living room and she told you to sit and wait there while she rounded up the children.
You patiently waited, until the doors reopened and she walked in with the children. She went around and introduced you to all of them. Emma, Horace, Millard, Olive, Hugh, Fiona, Bronwyn, Clair, the twins, and... "Has anyone seen Enoch today?" She asked the group. "He's holed up in his room again." Fiona said, rolling her eyes a bit. Miss Peregrine sighed and walked over to the staircase. "Enoch, come down here please!" She yelled, and eventually, footsteps quickly descended the stairs. "Enoch, we have a new arrival." She smiled up at someone you couldn't see yet. She motioned towards the living room and walked back in.
He trailed behind her, and you couldn't see him well. "Y/n, this is Enoch. Enoch, this is y/n. She's going to be staying with us from now on." She stepped out of the way to reveal a boy with jet black hair, fair skin, and an exasperated expression. "Lovely, now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to my room." His strong Scottish accent was heavily laced with sarcasm and annoyance as he turned and left the room. As you watched him walk away, something almost seemed to awaken inside of you. You smiled a bit to yourself at this strange new feeling. "Don't worry, Enoch's always in a foul mood." Millard said.
