As usual, the setting was Wangshu inn. Lumine decided to spend some time there to enjoy the scenery and collect some resources...absolutely no socializing with Xiao...yeah... She was sleeping soundly until she heard footsteps. They sounded as if they were being dragged by a string. It must be a drunkard or something. Lumine tried her best to ignore it, but the sound wouldn't go away. It seemed to get louder as if she was supposed to hear it; as if it was a sound of pounding guilt if she didn't act on it. With much hesitation, Lumine got up. She made her way to where the footsteps were. Following an invisible path, she arrived to the highest balcony in Wangshu inn to see nobody other than Xiao. Dark energy seemed to be surrounding him and shielding him from the world. The only sound was his heavy breathing. It surely did not help his case.
Lumine found herself being drawn to his painful state. She made it all the way to put her hand on his shoulder. Xiao jumped and flung her back like a rag doll - don't worry, she was alright. Xiao's mask was on and illuminated the rising sun behind him. It took a few seconds before he realized it was Lumine and went back to facing the balcony. As his mask flew off, he seemed to slump down and nearly fall down. He would have fallen off the railing if it weren't for Lumine. "Xiao, can you hear me? Xiao?!"
"Go... back to sleep."
"Are you alright?!"
"I'm...fine. Go back...to sleep."
"Xiao..." Lumine turned him away from the railing and finally was able to face him. Xiao had cuts and bruises all over him - some of which were still fresh. The most distinct injury were three long claw marks on his arm; it was often a signature of demons and other paranormal beings. Lumine only got to look at him for a moment before he pulled away. "I told you to go back....to...sl-"
"What happened?"
Xiao said nothing.
"At least let me how how I can help!"
Xiao said nothing.
"Fine...I'll be right back. Don't you dare move an inch!" Lumine quickly ran off and ran back with some of her emergency bandages. Being an adventurer traveling the world surely had its safety issues after all. One by one, she began to wrap each and every single wound tightly. Blood did soak through a few times, but Lumine was able to replace them easily. It took a long while until she was finished. The first few early morning voices were beginning to be heard from the hallways. Lumine looked at Xiao with a look that begged him to rest. He had done so much for her and she couldn't loose that. Looking at him, she began to think of her brother. Aether used to spend so much time and energy to keep his sister safe. This came at great costs, but he always seemed to be able to smile. Suddenly, Lumine found herself hugging her imaginated Aether. But in reality my dear reader, she was hugging Xiao.
The added pressure on his wounds made him wince in pain which brought Lumine back to reality. She looked up at Xiao before releasing him from her embrace. Without thinking though, she had grabbed Xiao's band and dragged him back to her room. Paimon was snoring in a corner thankfully, probably dreaming of treasure. Lumine fixed up her bed so it was surrounded by pillows and everything comfortable. She set Xiao on it before sitting in a nearby chair. "I don't need to rest," he grumbled, trying to sit up.
"You're right...you need to sleep."
"Tsk, Adepti don't sleep. You have no respect for the ways of the Adepti."
"...Xiao...please? Just try." It was no use protesting. Xiao wanted to say how he should be watching for any stray demons or how Lumine should be the one with a bed instead of him. But something kept him from all that. It wasn't his wounds, it wasn't his debt, it was a warm feeling inside his cold, dead heart.
