It's a dreary day in Monstro City, and the loud city sounds are simply hollow as the day drags on. All you can do is look out the window and hope something interesting happens. Suddenly, your phone lights up. It's unusual for it to do so, so you get excited. You automatically pick it up and are greeted by a text from your friend, Haida. It reads: "Hey Marshmallow! I just landed free VIP tickets to Zack Binspin's concert! I really DON'T want to go, so you can have them! I'll give them to you tomorrow!". Marshmallow isn't your real name, but everyone calls you that, so you go with it. You don't mind. The concert doesn't sound that bad. "Alright, thanks.", You write back. You put your phone down and watch the rain with a glisten of hope in your eyes.
Zack disconsolately looks out the window, pained. He has a show this weekend, and despite looking forward to it, he can't shake off the feeling of something missing. Is this loneliness? Anxiety? To be truthful, the small idol boy never genuinely aspired to be famous. Yeah, maybe when he was about four or five. But the thought of holding up this celebrity role until his death seemed. Unsettling. He's just destined to know that people will fawn over him, even when he's six feet under? The thought was bizarre, and so did the whole idea of being famous in the first place.
Zack nearly falls out of his chair hearing his father, Jack Skellington, calling him for breakfast. An extremely late breakfast. At 1 pm. And the two already ate breakfast (THREE TIMES.) He sighs and gets up to go eat. "Dad, Wh-" "Now Zack! You know you're a growing... raccoon... thing. You need to eat multiple times a day if you want to be as tall as me!" He pauses, giving Zack a moment to process what he had said. Before Zack can comprehend, Jack scoops him up and sits him down at the table. "Now, eat your pancake that's bigger than your head. Here, I'll help you." Jack puts his son directly inside the pancake (Zack being sick of it, since Jack has done it three times before this, on the same day.) "Dad, Simon's gonna be mad if I die, since I practically keep a roof over his head." They both pause, Jack removing his son from the pancake.
The next day, you're preparing to go to school. It's 7 in the morning and you're as tired as a galloping goddess. Your sibling, who is also called "other Marshmallow" for some reason, keeps pestering you. You look nearly identical, besides a detail you don't feel like mentioning. However, Haida is giving you those tickets today, so at least you have that. Other Marshmallow keeps begging you to be your plus one to the concert. You don't even know how they know, but they do. They're a huge fan of Zack. But you want to enjoy the concert, so of course you decline. Every. Single. Time. You eat a really silly sandwich for breakfast along with a cup of hot beverage. Your mother, Luka Megurine, keeps messing with your hair, saying something to your OTHER mother, Meiko Megurine. "Hey, Marshmallow! Tell mom about the tickets," Other Marshmallow randomly shouts at you. "I don't even have them..." You mumble, just loud enough for Luka to hear. She shoots a rude look towards other Marshmallow and walks to the counter.
Other Marshmallow nervously smiles and quiets down, "Well, when do you get them? I really want to see Zack... Zack Binspin!!!" they say, enthusiastically. "I bet that isn't even his real name. And I doubt that he really lives in a bin..." After giving your statement, it causes other Marshmallow to give you a stern, stupid look, one you recognize. They're about to say something snarky. "Of course it isn't his real name, and of course he doesn't live in an actual trash can! It's his stage idol stuff... God, Marshmallow, you are so DUMB!", they 'insult' you, crossing their arms and blowing a raspberry. "But isn't that his whole motto...?" , you mutter to yourself, standing up and grabbing your bag.
You wave goodbye and walk out the door. You walk as fast as you can so other Marshmallow doesn't try to walk with you. It's cold today, since it's fall now. You can hear the oddly busy sounds of Main Street off in the distance. It's a bit comforting. You've lived in Monstro City all your life, but you never really stopped to appreciate things. You had a lot of stuff to worry about when you were younger, so it isn't really the best thing to think about in the morning. Eventually, you reach school. It's...kind of quiet. Not many people are sitting outside, and if they are, they seem to be doing something just a bit suspicious. Oh well, it's school. You walk into the building, and are automatically greeted by your math teacher, Baldi Baldimore. "Oh, hi! Welcome to my schoolhouse!" He enthusiastically waves at you, smiling brightly. "Good morning," you mutter. He looks at you a bit confused, and stops you from walking away. "Is something wrong? You seem a bit down today," he asks, in a very, very concerned tone. "I'm fine," you say, trying not to look at him.
