New Beginnings

Weeks went by of bleak recovery. Before I knew it, autumn was encroaching. The month of vomit and diarrhea and restless leg syndrome was finally coming to an end, and my new life was beginning.
    I rolled out of bed as the guards flickered the lights and yelled for chow. I sat with my feet on the floor staring at the wall in front of me. One of my blockmate's calandars was there. She was an old woman who kept to herself. She had her shit together and liked to stay below the radar. She slowly crept out of bed, holding her lower back, and hobbled over to the wall, flipping September to October.
      As if I had been a page in her calandar, my eyes "opened". The daze I had been in since my first steps into this concrete mosh of hell had vanished; I had a clear mind.
      I smiled and greeted the old woman, who, in return, looked me up and down, then mumbling, "Someone's out of their funk." before turning out the door. I raised one hand to my forehead, I could barely remember the last month. My life had been nothing but silently eating and silently reading, then fighting for my life half the time. Recovery had hit me like a truck, of course, but I could handle that. The problem was much deeper, the root problem was that nothing could fix the hole in my chest.

         I walked thoughtfully to the dining hall. I was one of the last there, a fight was being interfered by some P.O.s. Something about cutting in line... 
     After receiving my plate from a concerned looking mute, I walked over to my regular seat.
    "Morning, l/n" Boo said
    "You look different today!" Piper chirped.
     For once, Nicky said nothing, and curiously eyed me.
    "Yea I guess I finally got over everyones snoring and got a good sleep in." I mumbled, no one laughed, just tiny snickers. Something inside me died.
     I sat there for the rest of breakfast listening to Piper's love drama. Nicky had been silent all morning, I was starting to worry.
     Maybe now I could take care of her.
