How did this all happen? A week ago, I was sitting in my college classes listening to the professor drone on and on about angular position vectors; now blindfolded in what feels like the trunk of a car. Thinking back on the past week sent a sharp pain to my head, where did it all go wrong? One answer came to my mind, my brother.

~

Yawning I packed up my books and laptop from the desk I chose to sit at. I was in my third year of college, majoring in Engineering. Once the professor had left the room, I pulled out my phone and saw I had missed a call, checking the number I knew immediately who it was. I also, knew I had no choice but to call back.

After heading down the hall stairs of the old building my Physics class was held in, I made my way outside, the smell in the air indicated a storm was on its way. I clicked the missed call and put it up to my ear.

Ring, ring, click.

"Yo."

My brother had answered on the other side of the line. "Took you long enough to call me." He had continued, slightly aggravating me with his nonchalant attitude.

"Why did you call, you know I have class," I said in response. My brother had come back home from a "vacation" as he calls it, but we all know that he was running around for months with his drug buddies, leaving me and our mother to fend for ourselves.

"Yeah, yeah, my bad. Something came up so I won't be home tonight. "He said and I instantly knew what he meant by that.

"Why so you can go get high again?" I spoke harshly because he always did this, Mom and I were struggling as is, I had been using my college savings to pay off debts and overdue bills, and I wouldn't even have enough to register for my classes next year. I had to get a job on top of being a full-time student and trying to manage the household.

Mom collapsed two years ago from a heart attack, so the hospital bills were racking up and the cost of her medicine was killing my savings. She couldn't even work anymore due to the stress it could cause her. But I had decided that no matter what I would take care of her.

"Don't worry so much sis, I'm gonna make up for everything," he said, which only caused me to worry more.

"Just make sure mom gets her medicine before you leave, I have to work late tonight." I sighed, giving up. "Love ya, sis!"

He said hanging up the phone. I looked down at the clock on my phone. 4:38 pm.

Shit.

I was going to be late to work. I was glad classes were done for the day, but now I had to go and deal with my coworkers.

I have been serving at Blue Diamond for a little over two years now, I still remember how the leaves were peacefully falling on the chilly day when my life fell apart.

I had just gotten the serving job to get some extra money, I was walking to the bus stop to head into town from the campus when my phone began to ring. It was my mom's old boss saying how she had collapsed and was en route to the hospital. Panicked I texted my new manager and told them I couldn't come in today as I rushed to the stop hoping the bus would come sooner.

I hurried into the hospital and almost broke down at the reception desk, but I couldn't, at least not until I had eyes on my mom.

Once I got to her room the doctor had said she would be okay but wouldn't be able to do any strenuous work and due to the severity of her condition, there was nothing we could do.

Once I heard the news, I called my manager and let them know the general idea of what was going on, I was just thankful they let me keep my job given calling out on such short notice so soon after hiring me.

Finally, I thought things were turning around. Working in the evening had provided mom and I with enough income to get by alright, and I was doing well in school despite my lack of sleep or free time.

Then, my brother came home. I don't hate him, and due to our familial relations, I was forced to care about him.

I got to the restaurant and went through my daily tasks, as per usual. Changing into my uniform, which was just an all-black outfit, however, I have grown since I got the job, so my hips barely fit into my pants and my button-up was noticeably tighter around my bust.

I didn't have the means to get a new uniform yet, and it still mostly fit, so I wasn't worried.
