Chapter Six

The shower was truly magnificent, it had one of those giant shower heads that covered my entire body with well-pressurized water. Even though the bathroom itself had been so clean it looked like nobody had used it there was a man's shampoo and body wash set on the shelf.

Some part of me had figured whose bathroom this was but I was going to use it anyways. In the past, with my brother and father always leaving behind debts I was used to dealing with debt collectors and loan sharks, but I've never quite met one like Leonardo Romano.

He had not only kidnapped me and tortured my brother but now I was being held against my will in some fancy house. I don't even want to know what he plans to ask me to do for work. Maybe he'd want sex or sell me into some human trafficking ring.

Darker thoughts began to swirl in my mind almost wishing I didn't pick up the call from my brother or let him back into my life. But that was quickly washed out when a quiet knock sounded on the door. "Excuse me beautiful, I just wanted to let you know there are some clean clothes on the bed out here, whenever you're done." Renzo had said, muffled by the heavy door between us.

I didn't know what would yet happen to me, but my mom's words echoed in my mind; you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar so lose the 'tude. I giggled thinking about all the good times we had together. I had to suck up my grief and mourning for the time being until I can figure out what was next.

Exiting the now steamy bathroom, back into the bright room. It was empty thankfully because the only thing between me and my birthday suit was a soft, fluffy, white towel. After double-checking my surroundings for any peepers, I wandered over to the bed where the kind man had said he had laid some clothes for me.

I quickly threw on the clothes that were chosen for me; thankfully they were modest in style but slightly loose on my body. An oversized black t-shirt and a pair of grey sweatpants that were so soft and fluffy, probably the most comfortable thing I had worn ever.

If I hadn't already slept for so long, I'd want to just hop back into the comfy king-sized bed but knowing that I was being held captive by some gangsters I wasn't sure I'd be able to enjoy the relaxation. I turned back to the large wooden door that stood before me and the unknown and reached for the chrome handle and turned.

It was quiet in the long hallway; small disk lights lined the ceiling and an elegant red runner with golden accents were placed on the floor. As I had thought, these guys had money, whether it was legal or not they didn't care about showing off and that terrified me. I padded down the hall, begrudgingly, until I heard voices coming from downstairs.

It sounded more like an argument the closer I got; "Will someone tell me how the shipment was stolen?!" I heard Leonardo shout, his voice echoed through the halls and seemed angrier than usual. His tone was noticeably irritated, and I was slightly anxious to continue walking, but the sooner I can get to work to pay off my debts the better.

Once I pulled myself together, I swiftly made my way into what looked to be a classy dining room of sorts. There sat a collection of men, stone-faced, and at the head of the long marble table, Leonardo stood. "Boss, the Russians must've got a tip-off from somewhere. We need to consider the possibility of a rat in our midst." One of the men had said calmly, seemingly used to the yelling.

It wasn't until I stepped further into the room and the floorboards creaked underneath me that my presence was noted. Every single head had promptly turned in my direction, some pulled out pistols aiming in my direction.

A gasp quickly escaped my lips; I was shocked by the events thus far but wasn't expecting this. I haven't even been in the same room as a gun since.. no never mind, I wasn't scared anymore. I thought to myself but denying the fact didn't help as my anxiety took control and caused me to shiver profusely.

My thoughts quickly enveloped my mind and thrust me into the depths of my past.

Years ago, when I was a young child and before my brother become a shabby criminal, we had lived as a normal, happy family. One day a man came to the house looking for my father, who had borrowed more money than he'd ever be able to pay back, probably to gamble away. That day, however, my father was not home, nor would he ever return. My mother tried her best to pacify the man, but nothing she said mattered.

The man was furious. He threw my mother across the room and was planning to hold her responsible for my father's actions. My brother at the time was only five years old, and although I was only three years older, I knew it was my responsibility to protect not only him but Mom too.

When the man had become overwhelmed with fury, distracted while beating my mother, I noticed the faint glisten of a sleek, metal object in his waistband. I'd seen my fair share of crime documentaries and knew what a gun was and vaguely how to use it. Hastily, I snatched it off his body, unlatched the safety, and promptly pointed it in his direction.

He turned to face me, anger mixed with anxiety on his face. I remember his dark voice as he shouted, "You don't know what you're doing with that, give it back before I hurt you too.", and while attempting to grab me, I pulled the trigger.

Once to his face, once to his stomach. His blood had splattered all over me, my face and hands drenched in deep red. His once-angry face turned dull as he fell forward and landed in front of me. Tears poured from my eyes, and I was profusely shaking, I'd just killed someone.
