I was watching Ek Villain for the first time. I still remember that when the film was released in 2014, I was 13 years old and a massive Siddharth Malhotra fangirl. I also loved Shraddha back then. And so I obviously wanted to watch the movie. My insistence was purely based on adoration and visually stunning songs. 13 year old Devi had no idea that the movie involved a serial killer.
Oh the tantrums I threw when Akka said that I couldn't watch it. I remember her telling me that she'll let me watch it when I'll be of a suitable age to understand certain nuances. But I guess she had forgotten about it with time. And so Devika Pillai is spending the evening of her last bedridden day, by watching Ek Villain.
Am I enjoying? Oh boy yes. I was born to witness chemistry between couples. Seriously I could be paid to watch people romance.
I'm on the scene where Aisha is in the train, in an attempt to leave Guru behind.
"Tum usse kyu bhag rahi ho?" Her father asks.
Same question, uncle. No difference.
"Mai usse bhag nahi rahi hoon, par usse apne peeche bhagne se rok rahi hoon."
Dayyyyuuummm.
"What's my sweetheart doing?" I tilt the screen of my laptop to show Akka what I was doing since I was unwilling to spoil the momentum.
OH SHE'S GOING BACK TO HIM, YASSSSSSSSSSS. GO GIRL.
Taking the hint, Akka settles next to me. After a couple of minutes, Rutu arrives. Of course.
"How are you feeling Devi?" I give him a smile, nod and a thumbs up, hoping that these earnest things would satisfy Ruturaj Gaikwad. Fortunately they do. He peeps in to see what we're watching. I sigh. For the benefit of my handsome brother in law, I detach the headphones. Lo, sun lo ap bhi.
"Hiiii Devi. Kaisi hai?" I recognise Jad's voice and shake my head. Impossible to have some movie time alone when your family is around. Even if the family consists of some very famous people.
"Ab tum aa gaye ho toh first class ho gayi main." I beam at him. Hearing this Rutu feigns hurt.
"Jaddu bhai aisa kya jaadu karte ho aap?! Zara humien bhi sikhao."
"Unko jaadu karne ki zaroorat nahi, Maccha, he himself is Jaddu." No guesses for the one who cracked this sadu sa joke. It could only be Sai. We all roll our eyes. Only Akka laughs. She's the only one who ever laughs at his bakwas jokes. They have this weird unsaid pact where they'll back each other to the end of the world. Even when the other cracks bad jokes.
I guess no one has any work today because one by one, everyone starts showing up in my room to ask me how I am doing. Except Raj. He sure has better things to do.
"AYEEE let's play antakshari." Jaddu says. There's a murmur of agreement as everyone finds spots to settle down in the room. All the pillows that I had used to support my laptop, vanish as people claim the ones they want. I do a quick glance at everyone in the room with gratitude. I'm grateful for these people God. And also for the ones who didn't show up, I add. Almost against my will.
"Koi kahe kehta rahe jitna bhi humko deewana, hum hai naye, andaz kyu ho purana....Na"
"Naina jo sanjh khwaab dekhte the Naina.... Bhichad ke aaj to diye hai kyu...Ya"
"Yad lagla ga yad lagla g, rangla tuzhat yad lagla g... vas ho usat yei kasturi cha, chakhalaya var god lagla g....Ga"
"Gangam style...woh woh woh woh watch my gangam style...oooooo...sexy ladyyyy....Da"
"Deva Shree Ganesha deba shree ganesha...jwala si jalti hai ankon mien jiske bhi dil mien tera naam hai, parwa hi kya uska aarambh kaisa hai aur kaisa parinam hai....Ha"
"Hey I was doing just fine before I met you, I drink too much and that's an issue but I'm okay......"
With Faf singing Closer, I can't stop myself from grinning ear to ear. We've had the most amazing antakshari ever. With Rutu adding his Marathi touch, me Akka and Sai bringing our Tamilian touch, and Jad with his own weird but cute song choices, it's been a blast of diversity.
"Ja...." The room goes silent. And then a familiar voice chirps in.
"Jhatakakr zulf jab bhi tauliye se baarishen aazad karti ho, acha lagta hai."
My eyes dart to the door to find Raj holding a tray with glasses. This guy was making something for us, all the while?
I have to stop my hands from touching my hair that I have freshly washed this afternoon. He's not flirting, is he? I watch him as he hands a glass of nimbu paani to everyone. I hear him say that he had heard us singing and thought that we'd like some refreshments. By the time he reaches me, his stock of glasses has exhausted.
"I'll make you one. Be right back."
I don't know what makes me lurch and grab his hand but I do.
"I don't need Nimbu Paani. I'm already refreshed." I flirt back, not caring if he meant the earlier song as a flirt or not.
His downcast eyes and the slow smile that spreads on his face make me feel giddy.
Who knew unfinished movies could still lead to beautiful endings?
Later that day, with a heart full of warmth, I fall asleep.
