The next week more people were disappearing. Rose was eating them. I just knew it.
"Class please calm down I have something to say." The teacher said trying to talk over all the talking students.
"A lot of kids are gone so today's lesson will be shorter then normal." He finished.
There gone! I thought to myself. Gone? Or more likely dead. I had to ask Rose. I just had to.
That day at recess I tried to find Rose so I could ask her. Then I saw her on the swing set laughing by herself. Did she not have any friends? I thought for a minute before walking up to her and asking.
"Hey can I um talk to you for a minute?" I asked her.
"Sure!" She said grinning with her red blood teeth.
We walked until I found a spot where no one else was.
"Um do you eat people like the students in class?" I asked nervously.
It was absolutely silent until Rose burst out in laughter.
"What are you talking about? I am not a monster who eats people." She said still laughing.
"You know the blood on your teeth and your finger sandwich. Also how the students in are class are missing!" I said.
She laughed again and then said, "That's not blood on my teeth I like to suck on red cherry flavored suckers. I also did not eat a finger sandwich I just rolled up ham and put it on bread." She said.
I was shocked but there was one more thing: the missing kids.
"What about the missing kids?" I asked.
"They are not missing they are probably sick." She said.
How could I have thought Rose ate them? It turns out there was a sickness going around.
Ever since then I never jumped to conclusions although I still avoid ever being alone with the hungry kid.
