Chapter 3

Marisa

The whole ride to my house was silent; neither I spoke, nor Nathan. Though, I noticed him clenching the steering wheel tightly causing his knuckle to turn white with how hard his hold was. I did not comment and looked out of the window.

My heart had calmed after the episode at the Wilson house when Nathan had pulled me closer to him. I am not going to lie when I say I didn't feel anything. It wasn't love nor was it hatred. It was familiar feeling of being held from the past; something I've been trying so hard to forget. However, that seemed impossible because of the time we spend together everyday. Sometimes, I ponder if accepting this project with Nathan was a right choice or not. But then, we had approached Wilson business and not Nathan. They could have assigned anyone of the other brothers. I think they gave Nathan this project to purposely make it hard for me. Or was it Nathan who insisted on taking charge?

The tingling from my left leg was still present when we reached my apartment building. Nathan stopped the car just outside the lobby door and waited for me to leave.

"Thank you." I muttered before making a move to get down. I paused when Nathan asked me the following question.

"Have you thought if you are going to leave with him?" He asked, his tone void of any emotions. I turned to look at him and found him staring right at me with something in his eyes that I could not decipher.

"I don't see how that's any of your business," I snapped. Didn't he say he doesn't give a shit about my relationship? Then, why the sudden interest.

He chuckled darkly, his face twisting in a scowl. "I don't care about you. I'm asking because you are the main operator from your firm on the project. I would hate if we made any losses."

My hands automatically clenched in anger at his selfish reason of keeping his work before anything else. I shouldn't be complaining because that's exactly what I wanted but it just did not settle well with me.

"Don't worry about that. If I were to leave, I won't be hurting anyone." I said, referring to my firm as well as his.

Nathan's jaws ticked and he nodded. I was expecting him to say something, but when he didn't, something unsettling settled in my chest making me uncomfortable. It was like I already did something which I shouldn't have.

Suppressing the indescribable guilt, I opened the door and stepped out of the car, just when another came from in front of us. The headlight was too bright to blind my eyes. I shielded my eyes with my hand and tried to look for the culprit who still wouldn't dim the lights. When the driver finally did, my heart dropped in my stomach.

My eyes found Jackson seated inside his car with his eyes trained on Nathan who sat in his. I shifted in my place when the dark eyes fell upon me. The anger was evident on Jackson's face, but it further confirmed my suspicions when he slammed the door hard, causing me to jump a little in my place.

I heard another door slamming shut but not as loud as it was Jackson's. I did not turn to look at Nathan who was probably standing beside his door, only to see the drama unfold before him.

"What are you doing here?" I asked him softly. He has a flight to catch tomorrow and after our whole talk at the reception, I didn't think I would see him up until the next week when he plans to return for my answer.

"Is this the reason why you don't want to come to the States with me? Because as soon as I leave, you get to reconcile with your past lover?" Jackson spat, his voice hard and hatred dripping from it like lava.
