Season One, Episode Two
Wendigo - Part OneNovember 10th, 2005
Evangeline was in the backseat behind Dean, and Taylor was on the other side of the backseat behind Sam. between the two girls was a package of Oreos that they were sharing (Dean had gotten it for them when they stopped last and made them promise not to tell Sam) when Sam jolted awake and immediately turned in his seat to check on Evangeline and Taylor. At the time, Evangeline Theodora Winchester had just turned four, and Taylor Catherine Winchester had just turned two a week before, on the day her mother died pinned to the ceiling about the bed Jessica and Sam once shared.
"You ok?" Dean asked when Sam let out a little sigh and settled back into his seat. "Yeah, I'm fine," Sam replied, pinching the bridge of his nose. Dean glanced at Sam quickly and then back at the road, "another nightmare?" the older brother asked. Sam didn't answer, "wanna drive for a while?" Dean asked. Sam, turned and let out a little chuckle, "Dean, your whole life you never once asked me that." Sam said. "Just thought you might want to, never mind," Dean replied with an audible sigh, "look, man, I get you're worried about Taylor and me, I get it, and thank you, but I'm perfectly ok, I don't know about Taylor though," Sam sighed. Taylor hadn't been the same since Jessica died, and Sam understood it, Dean wasn't the same after their mom died from what John had told him, but it didn't stop him from worrying.
"Mm-hm" Dean sighed again. He didn't believe that Sam was ok, I mean, the mother of his child, the love of his life, died in front of his eyes, it's not just something you get over in a matter of a few days, but he was better then what he had been so Dean wasn't going to push the issue and he would help Sam help Taylor, while also making sure Evangeline didn't feel neglected, it was going to be hard, and adding Hunting and looking for their dad into the equation, well, it's going to be like keep the tide on the sand, but Dean didn't mind. Most of his family was back together again.
Sam grabbed the map with a red x over Blackwater ridge and studied it for a few seconds. "Alright, where are we?" Sam asked, not taking his eyes off the map. "We are just outside of Grand Junction," Dean replied. "Daddy," Taylor said from behind him, "yeah, Tayls?" Sam asked. "I'm thurdy," Taylor said. "K, baby, do you want anything Evan?" Sam asked, "no tank you Untle Sammy," Evangeline replied. Sam smiled at how his brother had taught his daughter manners. Sam reached down and got a bottle of Grape Juice out of the bag, he opened it, took a sip to bring the juice farther away from the lid, then handed it to Taylor. "Tank you, daddy," Taylor said. "You're welcome, hun," Sam said.
Sam picked up the map again and looked at Blackwater ridge on the map, "you know what, Maybe we shouldn't have left Stanford so soon," Sam sighed, folding the map back up. "Sam, we dug around there for a week, if we want to find the thing that killed Jessica-" Dean started in a whisper so Evangeline and Taylor wouldn't hear what they were talking about, "we gotta find Dad first," Sam finished in the same tone of voice. "Dad disappearing, and this thing showing up after 20 years, it's no coincidence. Dad will have answers, he'll know what to do," Dean added.
"It's weird man, these coordinates he left us," Sam sighed, "what wewrd Daddy?" Taylor asked, "nothing sweetie," Sam replied, still not willing to drag his princess into the world that he was raised in. "What about it?" Dean inquired. "There's nothing there, it's just woods," Sam replied, opening the map again. "Why is he sending us to the middle of nowhere?" the younger brother asked.
Sam and Dean are in the Ranger station, Dean has Evangeline on his shoulders while he looked at all the decorations like a bored toddler, and Taylor is on Sam's hip with her head resting against Sam's shoulder. She was still sleepy having just woken up from a nap and was clingy which Sam didn't mind at all, they were looking at a 3d map of blackwater ridge. "So Blackwater ridge is pretty remote, It's cut off by these canyons here, rough terrain, dense forest, abandoned silver and gold mines all over the place," Sam explained, hiking Taylor up a little bit since she was slipping.
"dude, check out the size of this freaking bear," Dean said as Evangeline crawled down off his shoulders like a monkey and hid her face in his neck, "scarwy bear!" Evangeline whimpered, Dean, turned so she wouldn't see the bear anymore and started rubbing her back, "it's ok Sugarplum, Papa, and Uncle Sammy will protect you and Taylor," Dean muttered. Sam and Taylor came over to where Dean and Evangeline were, Dean made a gesture like he wanted to take Taylor off of Sam's hip since it looked like Sam was about to fall asleep himself, but Sam shook his head.
"And a dozen or more grizzles in the area, it's not nature hike that's for sure," Sam said. Dean was about to say something but was cut off by a voice behind them, "you boys wouldn't be heading out to blackwater ridge with two toddlers by any chance?" an older ranger asked. Sam looked at Dean to see if he had any ideas but when he didn't, Sam quickly said the first thing that came to mind. "Oh, no, sir, we're environmental study majors, from UC Boulder, just working on a paper and neither of us could find a sitter," Sam explained.
"Recycle man," Dean said, raising Evangeline's fist, causing Evangeline, Taylor and Sam to giggle a little, "bull, your friends with that Haylie girl aren't you?" the ranger asked, "yes. Yes we are ranger... Wilkinson," Dean said. "Well I will tell you exactly what we told her. Her brother filled out a backcountry permit saying he wouldn't be back from Blackwater until the twenty-fourth, so it's not exactly a missing persons now, is it?" Ranger Wilkinson said. "You tell that Haylie girl to quit worrying, I'm sure her brother's just fine," the ranger added. "We will... Well that Haylie girl's quite the pistol, huh?" Dean asked.
"That is putting it mildly," Ranger Wilkinson said, "Actually you know what would help is if I could show her a copy of that backcountry permit. You know, so she could see her brother's return date." Dean asked, giving a slight puppy dog eyes, but ready to ask Evangeline or Taylor too because it's totally, physically, impossible to say no to them.
